Some thoughts about my dealings with law enforcement after reading about the situation with the Marion County Record in KS. A newspaper very much like the ones where I used to work. Something needs to be done to restore the power of the press.

This is so bizarre to me. The peg board, the label machine, the paper rack, contest award plaques... It could have been one of the papers I edited. The thought of something like this happening never would have occurred to me. And they got their paper out! People like this are needed in this country.

A real attack is unfolding in #MarionCounty, #Kansas. Here the local #police has raided both the editorial offices and the home of the veteran editor of the local newspaper in what looks to be an obvious #overreach to serve a #GQP politician.

"So the backstory that we haven't told, because we don't wanna get in trouble, is that we've been investigating the police chief [Gideon Cody]. When he was named Chief just two months ago, we got an outpouring of calls from his former co-workers making a wide array of allegations against him saying that he was about to be demoted at his previous job and that he retired to avoid demotion and punishment over sexual misconduct charges and other things.”

Seems the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (Kansas state police) were also involved in the raid on the Marion County Record, owner, and employees.

"Marion police had coordinated with the KBI earlier in the week to launch the investigation. Though the KBI assigned an agent to the case Aug. 8 that has been 'assisting since that time,' KBI representatives stressed that the KBI agent didn’t apply for the search warrants and was not present when the warrants were served."

Why would the Marion, KS police be willing to go to such lengths over an allegation of “identity theft” by a local restaurant owner? Why not just a subpoena? Maybe this:

"The Record had been actively investigating Police Chief Gideon Cody at the time of the raid after receiving tips that he had left his previous job in Kansas City, Mo., to avoid repercussions for alleged sexual misconduct charges, … Though the paper never ran the information, details about the investigation — including the identities of those who made the allegations against Cody — were in a computer seized by police.”

If you've followed the story of the (probably illegal) small town Kansas police raid on the Marion County Record newspaper it's owner, publisher, and reporters, it gets worse. The 98 year old owner of the paper died yesterday, the day after the raid on her home.

@rejinl The paper had gotten a tip about the DUI and subsequent driving without a drivers license by Newell, and a salacious personal claim against her, so they were worried it was a set up. Newell attacked the paper on her facebook page and made false accusations against them at a council meeting, this caused the paper to respond that their investigation into her DUI was true and her DUI reporting accurate. They did not investigate or publish anything about the salacious personal accusation. But Newell was up for a liquor license because she failed to do so when she purchased the place in Feb, assuming the transfer of license from previous holder was all she needed, which was incorrect. If she doesn't have a liquor license, her business closes. Usually ABC licensing also do a background check with local police, which may be why the Police Chief is nervous. Lots of questions. Good questions.

While imprisonment may be a preferred outcome, the 11,820 taxpayers in Marion County may be provoked to respond to a vicious police act because of its direct effect on their wallets. Let each of them be forced to be individually cash-accountable for failing to hold their police accountable. And let the voters of Marion know the names of the powerful who caused this death: Judge Laura Viar (who violated federal law in approving the warrant), Rep Jake LaTurner, Restaurant owner Kari Newell (who started this vendetta against the newspaper for reporting on her drunk driving arrest, threatening her liquor license).
