"their confrontation in April marked an escalation in long-running tensions between a group of local and the officials and community members they cover that would boil over through the summer.

The small-town intrigue might have stayed in a small town, though, had Cody not... led half a dozen officers on an Aug. 11 raid of the Record’s offices and the home of its editor and publisher"

This poor woman. Clearly the stress of this illegal raid of her home killed her.

The police chief needs to be held accountable.

The Raid on the ‘Marion County Record’ Is Only the Beginning
Allison Hantschel, DAME
Aug 22, 2023
The Right's war on the fourth estate is nothing new. But when cops raided a rural Kansas newspaper office and its editors’ homes over an investigation in progress, a new horrifying precedent was set.

"Corporate journalism both failed to respond adequately to the GOP’s attacks on the press over the years and to recognize that scrutinizing policing would bring the same kind of authoritarian backlash.

While Republicans called for journalists’ violent deaths, editors and producers gave cover treatment to commentators who joked about bombing them."

So the story gets better/worse:

The affidavits that are the basis for the warrant to search and seize at the ? Those weren't filed until days later, and are likely back-dated to the day of the raid, because and corrupt judge.

"This looks like the latest example of American law enforcement officers treating the press in a manner previously associated with authoritarian regimes,"

"The Aug. 11 police raid sparked outrage among advocates and organizations across the nation. Officers seized computers, phones and other records during the search, a virtually unprecedented event in recent American history. Meyer’s home also was searched...

The Record said stress from the raid contributed to the sudden death the following day of Meyer’s 98-year-old mother, Joan, a co-owner of the newspaper."

OK, so, look...
The police raid of the was absolutely outrageous and a clear overreach.
At the same time, it seems just as clear that the reporter, ,, who downloaded 's driving record broke the law in doing so.
"I needed to corroborate the information a source gave me" is not actually a legitimate justification for breaking the law.
The Record should fire Zorn and anyone who knew about and approved her actions.

"The fall of local has been precipitous — a source of heartbreak and concern for many. I’ve spent two years photographing newspaper offices across my home state of Kansas. In , these concerns — about community, division, and rights — have collided."

And there's more!

The cops are now "withdrawing the warrant"--after disrupting the paper's operation, costing them money, and with the stress causing the death of one of the co-owners, now they go, "oopsies, here's your shit, no harm done"?

The paper is bringing a federal suit and GOOD FOR THEM.
