Thirty Three Years ago today saw the first ever edition of Twin Peaks on American television.
Like most things, my over empathetic self watched in parts -some I liked, some I loved, some scared me, and some hit too close to home.
But it definitely could use another re-run on free to air tv, all three series.
Don`t you think?

And I really love those tarot cards by Benjamin Mackey. Well out of my budget though.

I'll probably post more episode specific stuff later- this show is absolutely gorgeous, both the real-world parts (even and especially the banal suburban bits) and the surreal supernatural bits. E3 with it's weird purple ocean and the (apparently electrified?) bell on the roof are such amazing dream imagery.

"The Return" refuses to take you back to Twin Peaks in 1989 (when the 1990-1 show was set) and provides a much wider image of Lynch's favorite theme, how evil corrupts innocence.

You've read by now how this show is anti-nostalgia, but reading about it is not like watching it. The world of The Return is much more open and connected than the original series-- Twin Peaks isn't a bubble, it's an island in a very dark, dark world. New York, the Dakotas, Nevada- there is a darkness which reaches across N America and (I say this because I've seen the series before) was born here, in the desert.

My husband, who loved Twin Peaks but lost his mind withMulholland Dr, has said several times "David Lynch needs to stop fucking with people." David Lynch has done the opposite of that with "Twin Peaks: The Return"

He is fucking with people SO HARD.

I'm having a much better time following the thread of the show so far, partly from reading analysis/discussion of the show, partly from having seen the show and (especially) the movie just a few months ago. The Return comes more from the film "Fire Walk With Me" than it does the Twin Peaks series, and in fact it seems to play with that idea.
