Fresh from our exploration of the eastern Sounds, we couldn’t ignore the western side and decided this meant getting back onto the water. The mail boat could get where the van couldn’t, but there would be other places we could take the van—and still others that required a bipedal excursion.

As you approach ’s Ōkiwi Bay from the Rai Valley there are tantalising glimpses of Whangarae Bay (📷1). Ōkiwi Bay itself is barely visible (📷2), until you’re there (📷3). From the road beyond the bay are views of Croisilles Harbour, which Ōkiwi opens into (📷4). Croisilles is the name of d’Urville’s mother’s family; beyond harbour is V-shaped Tasman Bay—70km wide.

There’s a helpful DOC page on the problem of “managed forests” that aren’t being properly managed/ contained by the timber industry. It’s a particular problem in the Sounds & shooting the unwanted trees from helicopters with herbicidal bullets isn’t cheap. See doc.govt.nz/nature/pests-and-t

Wildlife at French Pass/ Anaru in Elmslie Bay, . As we pulled in a dolphin pod danced their way out to sea (📷1). The obligatory paradise shelduck/ pūtangitangi pair patrolled in-shore (📷2). Success during early morning hunt for a fur seal; repeatedly thrashing what was probably an octopus to break it up—a known behaviour (📷3). Weka endlessly entertaining (📷4).

(1/2) Mail boat run on Pelorus Sound/ Te Hoiere. It’s the longest NZ Post mail boat run, traversing largest of the Sounds at 380km of shoreline. Many dwellings are holiday homes (📷1), but some like the ship wrecker/ builder’s are homesteads (📷2) or farms (📷3). Surveyed in 1838 by HMS Pelorus, the main channel runs for 55km sth from hazardous Cook Strait (📷4).

About 20% of NZ's total coastline is said to be within the fractal-like submerged river valleys forming the Sounds, which also include 100s of islands/ islets. Whatamango Bay (📷1-4) is off Queen Charlotte Sound/ Tōtaranui, the easternmost of 3 principal bodies of water or “sounds” (the others are Kenepuru & Pelorus/ Te Hoiere). This shallow bay is often windy.

Port Underwood Rd is narrow, steep, winding & mostly gravel for 26km from Rārangi to Oyster Bay in Sounds; a sealed road continues across the divide to Whatamango Bay for 9km. Thankfully we encountered little traffic in our large camper, so took it slow & enjoyed the many bay views e.g. Robin Hood Bay (📷1); Ocean Bay (📷2); Kākāpō Bay (📷3); & Oyster Bay (📷4).

’s Whites Bay (📷1) is named for a black whaler, Black Jack White, who arrived in 1826 to live with Māori. In 1886 the first telegraph cable linked South Island here to North Island’s ; the cable station was restored in 1977 (📷3). Black Jack Track is a 4km loop that begins climbing from the E end of the bay (📷3); it has views into Port Underwood (📷4).

Ward Beach at Chancet in is 6.5km off SH1 at Ward; Weld Cone rises above the Flaxbourne River mouth here (📷1). A short beach walk north of the river are curious boulders (📷2–4). Brown spherical concretions reaching 1.5m in diameter contrast with the grey bedrock & are not dissimilar to the better known Moeraki Boulders. They formed from dolomite >65M yrs ago.
