I'm making a marquetry pangolin!

I started this project about a month ago, and I finally made the pangolin's face today. The next step is to make the tree that it's climbing and cut the whole thing into a background veneer (which I'm not looking forward to).

The scales are mostly made of zebrawood veneer and macassar ebony veneer. There are 280 scales, and each one is sand shaded (scorched along the edge with very hot sand).

I recently found this wall art we made as a Quiltboxes "keeper" piece. The woods are eucalyptus (white) and etimoe (red), and it is laser cut veneer #marquetry. The antique #quilt block I copied is a version of "Dove in the Window" called "Coronation", sewn by either Rebecka Shaul or Bulia F. H. Shaul in Upstate NY, somewhere from 1850 to 1890.

2) the piano - trying to learn some boogie woodies licks. I'm terrible but enjoying it

One of my favourite #fungi: Green Elf Cup, Chlorociboria aeruginascens (or aeruginosa, only distinguishable by the spores).

Look at bark-free #deadwood in humid places (often #oak) and search for bluish-green stains. This tiny #fungus contains the #pigment #Xylindein and colours #wood with its #mycelium. It was already considered a precious object in the #Renaissance for #marquetry.

Realized I didn't do an #introduction, so here goes -

I'm a #woodworker & #artist in #Hamilton #Ontario #Canada making #sculpture, #marquetry, #boxes, plus various other projects including #spooncarving, small #furniture, and acoustic treatments.

Really enjoying Mastodon and the Fediverse so far. This place seems to be absolutely exploding with amazing artists and makers.

If you like handwork then you'll enjoy #marquetry for sure. I wish I had the patience for hand planes and spokeshaves,although I do a lot of hand carving I guess

I mostly use the 'window method' and xacto-sharpening technique from this book, plus a lot of trial and error.
