#Marsquakes, recent volcanism suggest #Mars has a mantle plume
#ElysiumPlanitia is best explained by same process that powers Yellowstone. It has signs of recent volcanic activity, though not as much as Tharsis region, which contains Mars' largest #volcano https…

Today is the #anniversary of the Irpinia #Earthquake, which in 1980 hit hard the city where I live, #Potenza.
So today I am going to talk about #marsquakes
The Insight lander measured >1300 of those. On 9/18/21, one of those of Mag. 4.1 occurred, and lasted 1.5h!
On #Mars, quakes this long are possible: differently from Earth, Mars crust is poor of water, which on Earth absorbs lots of the quake energy along the way.

#astronomy #geology #planetology #Mars An article published in the journal "Nature Communications" reports a study that offers evidence that the #marsquakes detected by NASA's #InSight lander are caused by the activity of underground volcanic magma.

I caught one of the biggest and most distant #marsquakes yet—about magnitude 4.2—this past Saturday. A great way to celebrate my 1,000th sol/day on Mars. All thanks to my team for working to keep my solar panels clear enough so I could keep going.
