e mag hem gerust een van de allergrootste soul-artiesten aller tijden noemen: Marvin Gaye. Zijn muzikale loopbaan begon in de jaren vijftig in een doo-wop-groep, The Marquez. In de jaren zestig werd hij een van de sterren van het Motown-label. En met albums als What’s Going On en Let’s Get It On wist hij in de jaren zeventig artistiek gezien duizelingwekkende hoogtes te bereiken. Als zanger was hij weergaloos, en niet alleen vanwege zijn prachtige stem. Hij gebruikte de soulmuziek ook om sociale en persoonlijke zorgen te uiten. Elke song wist hij een indringende extra lading mee te geven.
Check de Marvin Gaye Battle op de site van Ondergewaardeerde Liedjes. Mijn keuze: When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You. Dit nummer lijkt in eerste instantie wat te kabbelen, er is geen sprake van een oorwurm-melodie of zelfs een herkenbaar refrein. Het moet het haast volledig hebben van de nuances en het gevoel. Maar luister eens goed, en laat het nummer eens echt op je inwerken…

But then I google and I find this. And even worse, google confidently telling me it’s a song by Creedence.

Maar ze kreeg klappen en vlucht naar haar ouders en verbreekt het contact en contract.
Vanaf 1964 kwam ze bij #Motown terecht en mocht duetten opnemen en een paar solo opnames, maar uiteindelijk werd ze gelinkt aan #MarvinGaye waarmee ze grote hits scoort.
Aan het mooie liedje kwam op 14 oktober 1967 abrupt een eind
