Very quiet over at Allens Pond today; swans and a few ducks way out on the pond, and a single Great Blue Heron that I was never able to get close to since every time I got anywhere near him someone else came down the trail and spooked him.

Another weekend hike, another owl species I haven't managed to catch on camera before. That makes four different species in the last 3 months.
This Short-Eared Owl was out over the marshes at DNRT's Ocean View Farm this afternoon. When I first spotted it from quite a way away it was flying with a partner, but only one bird got close enough to get shots of.

Went down to DNRT's Ocean View Farm today thinking it'd be a good day for hawks on the hunt after the cold snap. Saw two different large hawks along the road while driving there, but nothing in a few hours of hiking.
Then, when I was getting back to the car, I saw some sort of raptor land on a post along the field on the farm across the road. Turned out to be a Barred Owl.

Apparently, all I need to do to spot Merlins is head out for a hike when the light is lousy. This guy was happy to perch on one of the big evergreens down by the river at Westport Town Farm for a while, but the sun was low and behind clouds.

Day 5 (and, since my vacation ends today, likely last) day of pursuing the small raptors down at #DNRT's Ocean View Farm today.
Light was… not great, but the birds were slightly more cooperative.
The American Kestrel actually came in to within 50 feet or so, and caught a Merlin post-sunset grabbing a Mourning Dove for a light snack. Did the best I could with the fading light.
