@naunihal I've also made friends, mostly by replying to people and getting into conversations or just mutual appreciations. And click on folks you're seeing boosted, and maybe you find more folks. Took me a month or so to feel that I had a feed of real people (and other stuff I like, like photos). The Romans had a lot of different units for weight:

- uncia (Roman ounce)
- sescuncia or sescunx
- sextans
- quadrans teruncius
- triens
- quincuns (5⁄12 of a libra)
- semis or semissis
- septunx
- bes or bessis
- dodrans
- dextans
- deunx
- libra

Dextans is 5⁄6 libra, literally “less a sixth.” Which sorta makes sense when you realize that their numbering system does things like “IIX” (“two less than ten.”)

“Avoirdupois” literally means “having weight” in French. Dating back to the 13th century, the avoirdupois system uses pounds and ounces as standard units. It began in the wool trade of the Middle Ages (compared to the grain, which was used in metallurgy and precious jewels, for example.)
It’s abbreviated lb because it’s descended from the Roman libra, even though we don’t use that term any more.

Mass isn’t just weight, of course. This is a simulation of a black hole passing in front of a galaxy. The mirror image is made by the black hole bending light behind it (called an Einstein ring.)

The mass of a black hole depends on its Schwarzschild radius (the event horizon.) A radius of 30km (390 747s in a row) would weigh as much as ten million suns.

The Schwarzschild radius is named for Karl Schwarzschild. By weird coincidence, his last name means “black shield” in German.
