You know what the basement people think about the closure of the German instance of home.social?

That it's a result of being run by a person who has commercial solutions and that it is a Venture Capital project, and the instance is 1 year old... blah blah blah... Basement people are evidently RESISTANT to arguments and substantive discussion.

As a person with some experience, I'm willing to bet a good whiskey that after the vacations there will be a big mess here in the fediverse, and Mastodon will be plowed under within 3 months when big tech comes in with solid, secure, and of course supervised solutions.

Then the basement people will continue to spout their nonsense. These are incorrigible people.

Reason #842 that I know that Newsie.social and Mastodon has arrived.

The SEO companies and spammers are starting to use larger and busier instances for spam and promotional accounts.

Newsie Admin Note:

We're aware of an issue with the API we subscribe to for the Post translations on the Newsie instance.

Seems that we've been repeatedly exceeding the per minute translation capacity.

So instead I've decided to launch our own translation server. The service should be back up in a couple hours.

Newsie is going to locally deploy for testing some code that will allow our moderators to apply the same fine level of control on domain level moderation that members are able to apply for user level mutes.

Newsie mods will be able to apply DURATION with same level time based options used elsewhere.

If this works as anticipated we'll look at rolling this out for user level domain blocking as well and then roll the code for distribution.

I think it’s worth stating that the fediverse & mastodon doesn’t belong to your instances admin or their mods, it belongs to you.

Just like we need a strong middle class in society where everyone does their part to lift society up & share the burden, mastodon is no exception.

Systemic issues require systemic approaches.

We either build on our strengths or we don’t. So here’s the million dollar question - what are our strengths & who is doing it right?

#Backblaze B2 is a pretty cheap cloud storage alternative to Amazon's S3.

I've been using it to backup my personal Dropbox archive, currently storing 289.5 GB in it for $1.7 per month (not sure if the file versioning counts in that reported size).

You can also server those files from behind #Cloudflare, which I'll probably start doing for my #Mastodon storage needs:

See the screenshot for the relevant bit. This instruction will remove whatever Cache-Control you try adding (don't know why, this is the first time I'm using it like this):

try_files $uri @-proxy

Basicall, any #mastodadmin has to manually check caching headers to avoid surprises coming from Nginx + Docker interactions, and then try and fix that config via trial and error 🙂

C’est vraiment dommage que #mastodon (et les autres produits du même genre) n’accepte pas d’adresse mail comme nom d’utilisateur.

Des personnes qui arrive sur l’instance #mim depuis un #SSO #keycloak où le « username » est un mail restent à la porte.

C’est vraiment balo.
