@nikmykh здесь нет end-to-end шифрования. сообщения в базе данных незашифрованы и доступны не только админу твоего инстанса, но и админу инстанса того человека, кому ты их посылаешь, впрочем, как и их хостерам, если инстансы не хостятся in-house.

The permanent reason your instance matters is moderation—or defederation more precisely. Like a shared blocklist, but both ways. I won’t see toots from instances that octodon.social has defederated, and I won’t be visible on instances that have blocked octodon.social

Each instance has control over what other instances can be accessed, and it’s controlled at the instance level. So if I hang with Nazis I’m going to be blocked. And if my friend is on a server that allows hate speech, I can’t follow them from this home, because their instance will be blocked here.

Which means I’m happy to be on a quirky and aggressively “talk shit but don’t hurt people” instance. But “no bad words here” or “consequence-free speech at all costs” is a bad fit for me.

Recently mastodon.social has been defederated by a lot of smaller instances, because it’s so dang big there moderation is almost non-existent.
