Is it a Mastodon bug or my instance that seemingly random profile pictures are missing?

I have a script that removes old profile pictures from my instance. I would expect Mastodon to then refetch them from the original source.

But no?

I'm assuming that you mean MicroBlogFedi and not solely admins for the Mastodon software, in which case its good to use the right terms to avoid irritating those admins. Could be wrong!

I guess exploring tags and topics is the reason why a small instance would like to use a Federation relay. But the benefit seems fairly small compared to the resources it requires. It’s a firehose of data that you cannot control. And you pay for all of it.

Looks like my migration of assets from being hosted locally to Cloudflare R2 is proving to be successful. Still a few images not loading but getting there.

I've decided that I may as well leave signups for my server open (via approval) and if anybody requests an account I'll decide on a per person basis whether or not to accept it.

This is a pretty small server, but if I can provide a home for a few #mastodon users then I'd feel like I was doing my bit for the #fediverse.

With so many years of looking at account signups here and on our old system, I'm rarely surprised by some of what comes through the door. But this week makes me scratch my head.

Why are Vietnamese cabs, spas, and cock fighting betting platforms (yes, plural) signing up here? I don't get it.

Right now, I'm suspending 4 out of every 5 signups. I really don't want to go through a signup approval process, but I may need to consider it.
