Don't feel bad at all to ask questions. Even those of us who have been here a few months can sometimes feel like we have a lot to learn. Mastodon has a lot of capabilities, interests, and nuances.

Some of the fun #hashtags here are:

#FensterFreitag (German for #WindowFriday, because Mastodon began in Germany), where you will find cool photos of windows and architecture. (There are a lot of very talented #photographers on here.)

#HashtagGames where you can find fun wordplay games.

#Jokestodon for jokes and #humor.

#Dogstodon and #Catstodon and #Caturday all have great pet photos.

A lot of hashtags end in "-todon", after a subject. For example, #Geneadon is for #Genealogy. My favorite bit of wordplay with this suffix is the hashtag for donkey photos: #Asstodon.😄

And like on other platforms, you can also find a topic followed by "-OfMastodon," like #DogsOfMastodon.

Be sure to use and check out #hashtags . They are the primary method of following topics on #Mastodon . In some forms of the site (browser is different than the app), you can sign up to follow hashtags. I'm not confident enough how to do that to advise you on it, though.

Also, leave a space before and another after any terms you #hashtag for punctuation etc.

Just saw that there's a new instance related to one of my interests - but I don't know how to manage more than one on my end. I just want to post once, not divide my posts between instances or duplicate the same post. Don't want to be a deadbeat on the second instance, either. I've (finally) updated my website & linked my Mastodon account. With that came a small flurry of new #MacroPhoto uploads as well as a new #logo - which I ❤️.

I would appreciate it if anyone knows of ways in which to add a #feed of their Mastodon toots to a #Wordpress site - I would very much like to remove the bird site feed in the near future. 🙏

Use hashtags related to the subject of your post. Capitalise the start of words in hashtags so that screen readers don't get confused by then.

You can search for hashtags and even follow hashtags.

Boost liberally. Also don't be afraid to reply to posts, it's a lot more friendly here.

So, I've downloaded the Tooot App and I've now got the ability to translate toots (Yaaaay!)

My question is, does the translate toot button that works for me on the Tooot app work across all instances?

Can I recommend the Tooot app for people who want the translate toot option to everybody, regardless of what instance they're on?

My further question is how can I find other current events like this. Twitter was great for bringing disparate people into my feed when a subject was trending.
I guess I’m learning that on Mastodon, I need to follow a few people who post current news and then directly pursue hashtags on those events to learn more each time?

I still check Twitter for news and now I’m seeing Chinese-American journalists sharing about the protest with video clips. I haven’t been able to find these types of world event reporting yet on Mastodon. Does anyone have #MastodonAdvice for whom to follow or hashtags to track?

@watsoncomedian I have to recommend @feditips. There is a great, easy to read guide there.

My tips:

1) Use hashtags, but keep them to the end of your post/toot so your post will be screen reader friendly. Use CamelCase.

2) Use Debirdify or one of the other Twitter scrapers to generate a list of all your followers and follows. You can then import the CSV files into your profile.

3) use Content Warnings for more than NSFW or otherwise potentially offensive posts.
