Sorry it took longer than intended, but... #MastodonContentMover is now mentioned and linked in the #Mastodon official Github issue for supporting post migration π https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/12423#issuecomment-1704306717
Please give it a thumbs up if you see fit π

@tokyo_0 I hope you are doing well. I just stumbled across the #MastodonContentMover documentation. Thanks for the kind words! β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ Your project is the ultimate proof that our library actually works π Happy to help! cc: @bocops
Wonder what it'd take to write something that converts a Twitter archive file into #MastodonContentMover format. I keep thinking about it.
Just in case there was any confusion, #MastodonContentMover moves posts from a #Mastodon account to another Mastodon account. It has nothing to do with Calckey. If you try to use it with Calckey, it won't work... because it's built for Mastodon. Clue is in the name. Love you all.... π

...an SSL certificate of its own, adding to cost and complexity. Under time constraints and given the scale of the task, I set it to one side.
But more instances seem to be fine with low-volume news bots now. And the #BigBone library exists now, too, and I'm familiar with it through my work on #MastodonContentMover. It seems relatively trivial now to write code to post things.
So I'm toying with this again. It's very much on the backburner still, but seeing how people seem to be abandoning...

@binarytango (.social admin issues/concerns were the trigger for the creation of #MastodonContentMover by the way) @mmasnick
The #HomeSocial #Mastodon instance is shutting down tomorrow. (16 June)
We're here if you need a new account.
There's an awesome Mastodon content moving tool by @tokyo_0 which will take copies of your old posts over to the new server. You MUST run it while home.social is alive, so be quick.
It's command line, which can't be daunting for some, but we're here to help anyone.

Thank you for the heads up. I wish this had been around when Mastodon.lol shut down

A reminder to anyone staring down the imminent closure of #homeSocial this week:
You can move (save and repost) your #Mastodon posts to a new instance using the command-line tool #MastodonContentMover. It's still in development but has already helped others exiting home.social to move their posts.

#MastodonContentMover update: Release v0.01.03 now available! π
MastodonContentMover is a tool to save and then repost your #Mastodon posts (including images and videos) when you move instances.
This version adds detection of instances with shorter post length limits, and automatically splits your toots when reposting if they are too long for the new instance.
It also suppresses reposted toots from the local and federated timelines by default.

@tokyo_0 The Mastodon API also provides methods for retrieving conversations (aka "direct messages"). Is that something that would be interesting for #MastodonContentMover? According to the docs, these are simply posts with "direct" visibility... https://docs.joinmastodon.org/methods/conversations/
Just heard from a happy Mastodon user who tested the tool that it worked very smoothly for them.
There was a Java version glitch to begin with - that was my fault (and the website links and details are now all updated so it won't happen again). But once they had the more recent Java version all went like clockwork.
Very satisfying to receive a positive report - thank you! π

So what next?
β For me, reducing the intensity of work on this so it's sustainable
β Incremental archiving: Will build a basic version, even though I'd been imagining some elaborate ideas, (see above). It needs to work and within months, not years
β Converting from Mastodon's own archives; I think admins will want this
β Everything else, bit by bit
β Remembering this could be made obsolete at any time if Mastodon decides to build this in
The new code that splits posts according to the character limit on a target instance works with the latest update of the #BigBone / #Yuki Java library on which #MastodonContentMover depends (thank you @andregasser and @bocops) and is pulling the instance limits correctly from the instance. That was the last major test this update had to pass.
I'll keep testing this version with real data for the next day or two then hopefully release it before the weekend.

Anyone know of a #Mastodon instance with a non-standard character limit for posts? Would be great to test something out π
