@happyborg Like you, I do very much appreciate the - it is more of a social network vs. social automation. The calls to emulate <other platform>, to me, is akin to loud Americans visiting a foreign country and complaining that the KFC has a different menu.

There are somethings that I would like Mastodon to be able to do, but they're non-trivial technical emulation. Like frictionless following instead of "... copy this link, go to your instance, then search for this URL, ..."

Y'know, it's refreshing to have no fucking clue how many followers I have here, how many likes a toot gets, how many boosts one might garner.

I just toot what I want. People like it or they don't. They follow me or they don't. None of that affects me or my work or my play.

I like this place. Thanks for being here with me.

It means that it has become Mastodon culture and etiquette, which is a good thing! We do things a certain way, not necessarily consciously of how it helps others, but just because that's the way things are done around here. See, we early adopters can pave a good road for the future!
I hope to promote other habits in Mastodon culture, too, like citations for all factual statements to nip exaggerative propaganda in the bud.

Mastodon is , not broadcasting; replying is its natural mode.

When following a person, I don't rely on seeing their "original" posts on my Home timeline. Instead I visit their profile and check out their replies. I do that regularly.

My own posts are perhaps 90% replies, 10% "original" posts. Some of my replies I also ; this does feel a little awkward, but it is what John Mastodon wants us to do.

Good posts are fragments.

The stuff I post here sometimes is good, often not so good, but most of the time to me it feels as if it belongs. But occasionally a post feels out of place. Not substantively wrong, just slightly dissonant.

I think what these out-of-place posts have in common is that they are too big, aiming at completeness. That doesn't work well here.

There is a crack in everything. Show the cracks.

I refollowed a user here, only to unfollow because of complaining about a lack of interaction in a post that also said "I refuse to use hashtags."

Happens just enough to be vexing.

Reminds me when I came across other Americans while traveling in Asia. In a food court KFC they were loudly complaining that the food was different, the menu wasn't in English, and it was impossible to find decent food anywhere.

When I came to Mastodon three months ago, the Mastodon principle of via immediately made sense to me. It supports the principle of and mutual , which underlies all of the customs that constitute .

The author of the post decides for themselves which aspects of their post they want to be found by the wider network, by inserting hashtags. The person searching for content is asked to respect those choices.

Beautifully simple.

Very wise words.

When I arrived here from the other site, I was excited by the opportunity to absorb the strange and quirky customs of a different culture which seemed to be so effective in promoting constructive dialogue.

The common denominator for all those customs: for the other guests in the house.

When John Mastodon wants to boost someone's post along with his own comments, he posts a reply and then boosts his reply.

This helps with your problem. In a reply one can edit an existing CW from the original post, and one can add a new CW if the original had none. (As I did here.)

Thus: write a brief affirming reply, add your CW, boost the reply. Not quite what you want, but sensible I think.

@Mrfunkedude

Same here. I accept that my usage won't always be up to my own standards. Normally I don't correct it if I have forgotten the CW, next time I will try to remember.

Conversely, when replying to a message without CW, sometimes I put a CW in, like here. Though not always. Important (in my view) to allow for a bit of chaos! :-)

Thanks for pointing to this article by John Naughton. Love the quote, and enjoyed his article. He gets it.

Do you know his Mastodon account? He doesn't advertise it, so he probably wants to be left alone?

Either way, my thanks to for his article. His blog is worth visiting too:
