I'm a big nerd so I like to find out how things work. I knew how stuff worked on Twitter and why it was a Gen X/boomer platform. In this thread I hope to explain why Mastodon is a millennial platform, why there's no search*, and what you can do about it.

Well, I don't know about "famous people" but I choose to use my powers to boost the voices of people who are talking about things I care about. E.g. trans rights, racism, the future and design of Mastodon, books and science fiction, TTRPGs etc

My inner librarian is sad that important information and conversation gets lost because people aren't used to the platform.

_We_ are the algorithm, that's how I see it anyway.

I'm doing a bit of #MastodonCuration because whilst I'm pretty new here there are fascinating conversations that are just... disappearing and will never be found.

The power of # to let people get themselves up to speed and catch up on conversations and find people is wildly important but they're very much blunt objects.

The great thing about none of the journos on here knowing a GD thing about Mastodon or curating is there's this tiny window we're in. This tiny window where I can look at a BS scare story and smile because there's no # and it's not going anywhere. #MastodonCuration

And as for #MastodonCuration whacking tags on _fascinating_, _valuable_ discussions so that they can be found by other audiences is actually pretty important, or they're gone!

@caryn @kkeller I'm currently engaged in polite #MastodonCuration which basically is because there's so many valuable discussions and they'll be lost for new(er) people without a # I ask nicely if a bunch of selected # are useful.

Some journalists are polite and grateful others don't understand or appreciate the labour.

@brigantine72 @briankrebs @micahflee I am not an expert but unless free text search is introduced across all servers (and actually that's a TERRIBLE idea) than # are the way. A recent update let's you follow a # and I've decided to adopt respectful #MastodonCuration as a result.

Man, I love #MastodonCuration on #Mastodon I get to read cool stuff and have to think about it enough to put some # on there.

My other other new hobby is telling wannabe big accounts that I "can't" reboost their pictures because they have no alt-text. Let's be honest, I _won't_ but maybe can't will get through and then they'll start acting in an #accessible fashion.

So archiving costs money. Text is pretty cheap but what is the archive policy of most servers and do toolsets exist to identify popular toots, or toots that act as nexuses for curation or ones that are heavily bookmarked as these seem like ones worth saving.

Twitter content makers have identified deletion of old material as a concern in moving.

I don't have an agenda is the root. There's a lot of different efforts to help the world out and I can support people who can by enabling them to find information. (#MastodonCuration is one of my hobbies.) And boosting there posts.

I can be kind to people. And I enjoy listening. 😀

But I don't really enjoy "discourse". It brings out the worst in me and I don't want to be the worst person I can be, I want to be the best I can. 😀

A thing you can do to help posts that you think are awesome and deserve more eyeballs is curation.

I do stuff like whack some # on like... #TwitterMigration say and #MastodonBoost or even #MastodonCuration and then people who are interested in those topics will be able to find them. There's no search function so sometimes even putting someone's name on like #Dura can help you find all their posts.
