Well... Finally rejoined mastodon after I lost my account from #MastodonLol :(

Took a while as I was anxious to rejoin in fear it would happen again with no email notice. It's constant was not purged as well which is uncomfortable and I have to rebuild my follows.

@damon @tchambers @supernovae @kone @yassie_j I'm giving an additional example of why it would fail on top of their planned disregard for user trust and safety; I know if they joined AP, it'd go down like #mastodonLOL did. It's a failure both from a technical standpoint as well as a societal one.

@Mayana @oliphant I follow several admin accounts on other instances and my main motive is that I might need to switch some day, which came in handy when #MastodonLol shut down. I can see how you found it exhausting, so I'm sure your choice has been right for you, though.

ok so in order to "search" on mastodon. you have to publicly post what you wanna search LOL. which is, i don't know. it just feels really kind of...i don't even know what to say lol.

The server mastodon.lol seems to have shut down for good, about 5 days earlier than had been announced.

It won't be possible to migrate from old accounts with the server offline, but if you or somebody you know from the server would be a good fit for sunny.garden, registrations are open.

@mike Uh this is a good guide for moving servers in general but since mastodon.lol isn't up (and apparently won't be up again) the steps which refer to the old server won't work. But one thing which might work: use the #MastodonLOL hashtag to find people you used to follow or answer any questions you might have. A few of us are hanging out there trying to help as we are able.

Mastodon.lol Users here are simple instructions for moving to the Canadian without losing followers:

1. Got to your OLD server. Go into your preferences, import/export and request your archive. This is like a backup
2. Sign up on https://thecanadian.social
3. On THECANADIAN.SOCIAL server: Go to Account -> Moving FROM another account
4. Enter old account's handle
5. On OLD server: Go to Account -> Moving TO another account
6. Enter new account's handle and submit

@davidslifka @nova Admin burnout is definitely an issue. I'm more familiar with the #MastodonLOL case than this one which seems odd because Kris Nóva did set up a team but I guess that wasn't enough?

I was looking at my .lol receipts just now, and I thought it might be a good idea if someone, not necessarily me, gathered all the stories, screenshots and other related data before the instance goes down permanently, and does write-up about it, save it for posterity?

Like, if you were there, what did you see? Do you have any receipts?

Also, if you are still on there, get the fuck out, you have about three weeks left.

It's awfully "business as usual" for a lot of people that I know from there, considering their instance is set to implode en May 9th, 2023.

Technically it's easy. I'm not a tech person at all, I just followed the instructions.

Emotionally it was hard. Weird. I don't know why. I really liked lol. I also really like this strange object in space. Maybe lol was like my first love :)

Question: if I have a #Mastodon account on one instance that redirects to an account on another instance, are there any ramifications with deleting the first, redirecting account months later?

Context: I migrated from #MastodonLOL months ago and currently that account is set to redirect to this 4bear account. I'm thinking about deleting the LOL account now (before I don't have a chance to?) since all my followers should have transferred etc. But I don't want to muck with anything if it'd affect my followers in any way, so I thought I'd ask the #Fediverse just in case... Thanks!

@T_Capehart Spread the word if you are in touch with anyone else who might also be trying to use #MastodonLOL but unaware of the shutdown. Although Nathan posted the shutdown notice to his account in February, obviously not everyone saw it and I don't have a lot of other bright ideas about how to reach the right people.

Fortunately for me, #MastodonLol came back long enough for me to export my following and block lists, then apparently crashed again for good. I have to say, the migration experience is not as great at #Mastodon experts like to say it is.
