I cannot wait for the day expanding a reply causes the client and/or the server to fetch the full context by crawling the thread (one post at a time if needed)… it would make the experience a lot better even if it took a few seconds for each to load.

On one hand, I do want Mastodon to have better discoverability as it obviously makes finding interesting content easier.

On the other hand, I would like to avoid anything that could be used to recreate Twitter/X's "main character culture" (i.e. deliberately misinterpreting posts in order to pick fights with other users).

We'll wait and see I guess.

I noticed that the announcement of full text search in Mastodon version 4.2 is having a bit of a mixed reception.

One camp is excited for the feature and thinks it is an important step in improving discoverability on Mastodon.

The other camp finds the news of this feature being implemented infuriating/horrifying. They view full text search as a key component in amplifying spam/harassment (along with quote posts and an algorithm based feed).

I have seen the blog post by jwz about changes they want for Mastodon (and by extension the Fediverse). From what I gather, the features/changes they want are as follows:

-Proper blocking: They want the "Block" function to ensure that they can't see the blocked user's posts at all as well as ensure that the blocked user can't find a loophole to still interact with their posts.

It seems like "Direct Message" implies privacy. But everything is unencrypted, which doesn't seem intuitively obvious to me as an end user.

If I reply to my own toot what does mastodon do with the replied-to toot wrt the home feed of people that follow me or any hashtags in the one that gets replied to?

I feel like on Twitter the top tweet in the chain shows up with the new reply so that followers can see there's a whole chain to be read. This feature seems useful to me and I relies on it to make long-running threads.

On the other hand sometimes with mastodon I can't even see other people's toots being replied if I don't follow them, which I assume has to do with federation, but I'm wondering how my own replied-to toots look to people who are interested, either through following me or up-chain hashtags. Like should I also boost them when I reply, or does the software automatically do something comparable?

I'm sorry if this question doesn't make sense. I couldn't formulate it appropriately for Google, and maybe not for people either? Boosts for reach appreciated.

#mastodonmeta every so often I get mildly bugged by the lack of a quote boost feature.

However, usually, I am super happy that quote boosts explicitly aren't a thing. Way too many times on the birdsite QRT was used to boost bad takes for dunks. Or worse, to encourage dogpiles and targeted harassment.

However it would be useful to wrap a boost in a content warning or just add a small comment to a boost.
