I’ve read many arguments about the functionnality of “Quote toot” or most known by “QRT” for “Quote Re-Tweet” from Twitter. I must confess that I’m glad @Gargron has always refused to implement it but prefered the “Boost” featured! 👍

“Boost” is a better feature than “QRT”, from my point of view, because Mastodon is designed for community first and not ego first! When you “Boost” a toot, you’re telling your people: “hey, take a look at this 👀” it might be good / bad / accurate or not, but most importantly it has been written by someone else than you and you think your people might want or need to see it too. And, by boosting it, you make your part of the community to spread something that you think might worth being spreaded! And you’re pointing the light toward someone who you think deserves it 🆒

“QRT” is really powerful too, but not in the community interest: it is designed to serve your ego first! You want to tell everyone else what *you* think about it, or reappropriate the toot for *your* purpose. And you expect your people to reward *yourself* back for having QRT someone else! Or worst, you want to harass someone and beeing approved by your people for your stupidity. Nothing more! 👎

You don’t need “QRT” if:

- you like the toot: fav it ⭐️ you will reward the author
- you want to give your opinion about it: reply to the author and start a conversation 💬
- you want to share it: boost it 🔁

You need your ego to be flattered? Why not keeping an account on Twitter and stay there? 😉

"Newcomers" are experienced, educated, and highly motivated. They have access to resources to share, provided you explain your constraints effectively.

I got it, it's a digital diaspora and we're all TIRED. But lots of arguments boil down to "I was here before it was cool" hipsterism.

You should flag and punish gatekeeping in your community. Alienate this crowd at your own risk.

It may be standard for microblogging, but it's hella confusing for outsiders.

It needs to be self-explanatory (think screenshots shared via text. What am I seeing here?). How? No idea. But it's broken, currently. We can do better (than corporate solutions)

Personally I don't like twitter design, with quote on same level of simple retweet. Although Mastodon boost is somewhat too slippery (and... Uneventful? Gimme confetti 🎉🪅), in my mind boost is first, almost muscle memory, and quote is more thought of, requiring precision.

Maybe double-tap boost opens quote compose? It rewards "advanced" users without adding cruft for casual ones.

A quote boost has 3 three factors:

Display: mastodon links should show full post instead of open graph. App level?

Compose: quote should be on same level as boost. Maybe double tap? App level.

Analytics: original toot collects quotes, notifying author. That's system level, baby.
