@mastodonmigration another great thing: we're not just building it for ourselves, but also for people who aren't here yet.

@mastodonmigration yes, the fact that the people using it have an almost direct say in how the Fediverse should be built is, on its own, a great example of its benefits.

@ocdtrekkie @Edent I see little benefit over just using hashtags #mastodonsearch
However, reusing a past opt-in setting that has already been federated to other servers is NOT wise. Changing the meaning requires confirming informed consent. And because the other servers will use the past, federated setting before consent has been confirmed, unintentional and undesired indexing will happen.
The safe and ethical choice is to deprecate the old, badly defined attribute, create a new one, ask for opt-in at upgrade, and federated that to the network.

@Gargron
ok so in order to "search" on mastodon. you have to publicly post what you wanna search LOL. which is, i don't know. it just feels really kind of...i don't even know what to say lol.

draft - an instance of mastodon that has an open search
don't get me wrong, i understand some or even maybe many existing mastodon instances don't want to change their search function and keep relying on hashtags, and that's fine. but that doesn't mean, especially considering mastodon / activitypub enables it, is that, we can't build a new *instance* that *does* have a better search function, WITH a twitter circle equivalent that would still enable privacy within an open search system

also, the problem with hashtags is you can't have a space in a hashtag. i guess you could do an underscore, but now we're just making it more and more needlessly complicated to search and find things. and don't get me wrong, i understand some or even maybe many existing mastodon instances don't want to change their search function and keep relying on hashtags, and that's fine, i guess. but that doesn't mean, especially considering mastodon / activitypub enables it, is that, we can't build a new *instance* that *does* have a better search function, WITH a twitter circle equivalent that would still enable privacy within an open search system

I get that search on Mastodon is a topic that many people have Big Opinions on, and I don't want to go there. However, I just discovered / realized I can't even search my own Toots. I feel like this is a big let-down.
One of my main use cases for Twitter/Mastodon is as a journal. Do I have to meticulously tag every single Toot to have any chance to recall what I've written about a topic?

The real point here is that, in four months, there have been plenty of complaints, it's just that @supernovae has ignored or dismissed them
That fact does not make the complaints go away, or become resolved
It has made sure #ByronMiller's attitude has not gone unnoticed, however

At the moment this isn’t opt-in so if you prefer to have your posts unsearchable you have to set them Unlisted. Keep in mind that by doing this they won’t even appear on the local and federated timelines.
(I’m not arguing for or against search features, just giving information)

@tupper More and more companies are turning on their users, assuming they're fair game to milk for money. Unfortunately it's going to backfire and hurt their profits just like it did with Twitter. It shows that federated approaches may be the only way to avoid having your social networks get used by greedy interests.
Mastodon's biggest setbacks are the limitations in searching and lack of features that are intentionally excluded from an exaggerated fear of harassment. There are discussions in the works to hopefully change this. Having consent dependant searchability that users can opt-into, or on by default for the the instance.
See this discussion: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/21627
Some instances like the one I'm using https://universeodon.com has enabled custom search features from this patch https://github.com/VyrCossont/mastodon/pull/8
It also has a custom UI theme that looks more similar to Twitter you can try from here https://elk.universeodon.com

I read a post two days ago about a #ChatGTP exploit using a Grandmother's good night lullabye to get around a content block. I wanted to share it with someone today.
I neither bookmarked or favorited this Global feed toot from two days ago, and it was not from someone I followed. I can remember several elements in the toot, but not the exact author details, of course. Without hitting the exact hashtag I will never ever find it.
This is frustrating. #fediverse #mastodonsearch

@gbhnews
A feature that's been missing for Mastodon has been fulltext searching of posts, aka fuzzy search. :fedi:
Searching is mainly done via hashtags so a common trend is to add the relevant tags at the end of posts.
It's a bit of a controversial topic to have the content of posts be searchable on Mastodon, but I'm sure with proper consent options to opt-in or opt-out that hurdle will be solved with good implementation. The discussion lives on here: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/21627
There are exceptions though using custom implementation patches serverside like this one on universeodon.com written by clever people like VyrCossont https://github.com/VyrCossont/mastodon/pull/8
For news based instances you really do want some forms of better searching like this implemented.
Welcome to the fediverse and best of luck! :elmo_fire:

Yes, you have to be on an instance that has that search extension installed. On regular servers it will not work.
It has this custom patch by VyrCossont installed: https://github.com/VyrCossont/mastodon/pull/8

Very true. Some instances have implemented custom full text search like: https://universeodon.com
I'm hoping it gets implemented in the future. It's being discussed here: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/21627
