Yes, you have to be on an instance that has that search extension installed. On regular servers it will not work.
It has this custom patch by VyrCossont installed: https://github.com/VyrCossont/mastodon/pull/8
Heres what I get when searching: "npr"on Universeodon

Some instances have implemented custom full text searching like: https://universeodon.com
I'm hoping to see adoption of a way to fulltext search being implemented soon. 馃槉 It's being discussed over on GitHub here: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/21627

I agree with that prime directive "to leave control in the hands of the user" 100%
I don't see how that can't go hand in hand with also being in control of being searchable and discoverable if the user wishes to.
For example I feel in control when I have the option to choose to be discoverable or not. If I don't get that option at all then I feel like I lose control because I wish for others to engage with me.
Hashtag searching is extremely limited and it unfortunately can't translate complex ideas which require multiple keywords or detailed concepts.
Here is one example of implementing explicit consent to being full-text searchable: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/23808

@feditips
This looks like a great option for now but I can't help but think that allowing everything in posts to be searchable as an option would be a better approach. That would do away with hashtags altogether.
Some Mastodon instances have implemented a custom full text search feature like https://universeodon.com from https://github.com/VyrCossont/mastodon/pull/8 I've been using it lately and makes finding things that much easier.
I'm hoping to see adoption of a way to fulltext search being an instance option, opt-in and opt-out depending on the instance settings implemented by default soon.
For anyone curious this is being discussed in this GitHub thread: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/21627

I think a lot of it stems from Mastodon users wanting to be searchable and discoverable but the only way to opt-in to this is unfortunately by using a lot of hash-tags. If toots were searchable this wouldn't be necessary.
The https://universeodon.com instance has implemented a custom feature for searching text in posts which I've been trying out and it's great. I'm all for discoverability without having to use hashtags as long as it respects those who choose not to be.

Mastodon by default unfortunately only supports searching via hashtags. You can't search via content in posts unless they type a specific hashtag.
There are exceptions though...
The https://universeodon.com instance has implemented a custom feature for searching text in posts. I'm hoping this gets adopted by more instances! It makes finding like minded and interesting discussions that much better.
Trying there might help you find skeptics and ufo related discussions that way 馃槈

Full text searching of toots!
Screenshot of how it looks over at https://universeodon.com
A custom full text search implementation!
It won't catch everything but it makes finding interesting and like-minded magnitudes easier than painfully spamming hashtags.

Wow this #mastodon instance universodon.com has some of the more enhanced search features I've been looking for!
In this blog it's mentioned that this is going main on Mastodon but no timeframe given. I hope this is accurate! If so that's great news! The limited search features of Mastodon is what I've always seen as the thing most holding it back from being adopted as a good Twitter alternative.

#Search always works for hashtags and usernames.
Text search has to be enabled by instances.

@UK_Daniel_Card Mastodon is the content well, hashtags are the pennies in the water and hashtag searching is the bucket that finds them. Of course, it rather relies on people throwing those pennies in the well to start with. At least that鈥檚 the conclusion I鈥檝e come to so far.
