Almost 2 months on Mastodon — am I still a newbie?

Question for y’all: I’ve noticed that some peeps boost their own posts, and I’ve done it some myself, but I don’t really understand why — why do you boost your own posts, and is it necessary to boost them immediately?

I have had so many great conversations here in the last few days and weeks, received so many compliments and gladly handed them out, and experienced so much encouragement and tried to give back, that I wonder how I have endured years of shouting into an empty abyss ( :birdsite: ) abount what movies I like and why!? (Except for a few really dear echoes, which I was allowed to find again here. 🤗 )

I know I know... I keep saying the same thing, but I get so much joy of that old timey social media feeling here on Mastodon. I've been on social media for a looooong while and I have held onto my ancient Tumblr account over the years because it gave me the same feeling (that this was ours, chaotic maybe, but also just ours).

There's a few things I've noticed since joining Mastodon earlier in the year, and now using it more since the whole debacle on the 'other' site.

It's very much pre FB (2007 when I joined it), feels like the forums I used to have accounts on as far back as 1997, PolymerClayCentral, Car clubs etc. where you could build relationships. I like this, but I also like that they are all linked/connectable, once I'm creating again I can see me heading over to Pixelfed as well
