on the way to work I stop at Exxon to use their air pump
because I cannot afford a new tire
and when I pull back out on to the highway, I listen to a free audiobook recording of “On Contradiction” and drive toward Wilmington
and I go to a young woman’s house
we used to be friends and now she is my drug dealer
and I call her
and she comes out
and I get well
and I finish driving to work
and I want so very, very, very badly to be free

Marathon

Legs legs legs and thighs
Moving past my darting eyes
The pounding of feet up against my street
As the sun begins to rise

Sinewed calves and sneakers bounce
Along the front of my old house
It’s good I’m on a hillside terrace
For I’m staring like a louse

A small child came into this café
a passenger in the cradle
of his mother's arm
but then woke and began to cry.

It's obviously tired,
and 45 years in
on this callous-creating mud ball,
all I can think is
grab some coffee and soldier though,
kid,
naps won't always be there to save you,
and safe, soft shoulders are precious
few.

I am not dead
I said a few expletives

I had been hit a real doozy
I felt a bit woozy
I needed to sit down

I got up off the floor
I swore some more
I had many effs to give

I had to make a decision
I monitored my #vision
I felt my tender sore crown

I thought all was fine
I looked for a sign
I went off for a snooze

I have no need for a nurse
I don’t feel worse
I will attend to the bruise
