I knew that #Mastodon is big in #Japan but mstdn.jp activity figures are wild.

Since November it's stable around 400k registered users, most of which go inactive for months at a time. But in the past 4 days, 200k of them returned active. That would account for half of the increase in MAU as measured by @fediverse.

Is this just the effect of word of mouth off-fediverse?

So I am building an #iOS app called #MastoStats to show your Mastodon Stats as a widget on the today screen. I have most of the UI done, and I am now working on connecting it to Mastodon. This is really exciting.

Recent stats from the #metalheadclub Dashboard:

Just 15 % of the users who registered in November are still active today. Usually about 50 % are still active after two months.

For me this is an indicator that most users were just checking out Mastodon because of the hype. Not because they were really interested in it and seriously wanted to change their habits ;)

@fediverse The #fediverse MAU figures are quite constant these days. This suggests the retention of users who joined 1 month ago was better than with some previous waves. Or we have an exact substitution by new registrations in the past month. Any ideas which, @hildabast?

Some more #mastostats... as you can see the begin of week 46 was the most busy on this server according to CPU usage. Up to 9 CPU cores were used (cpu-month.png).
When looking at cpu-year.png you can see the total increase of post-Musk #fediverse and another thing: in April the new server with NVMe and SSDs has been brought online. The dark blue color on the upper limit is the disk IO wait of the old HDD based server.

Time for some #metalheadclub #mastostats

Almost every number in my Mastodon statistics dashboard is drastically declining: New users, user interactions, activate users.

Just 21 % of the 3,429 users who registered in November are still active today.

Seems like it's going to be pretty silent here, soon. I'm a bit sad that most of the new users just stopped by for a couple of days and don't seem to be interested in #Mastodon anymore. But this has happened before and does not come as a surprise.

There is a lovely scaling in the distribution of the number of Mastodon users across instances. Without sophisticated analyses, it goes as like N^(-3.6), and spans at least 5 decades along both x and y axes.

Novel surge in Mastodon, likely due to updating the count of instances.

I count almost 40k instances (both up and down) and 6.5M+ users, with 0.6 billion messages.

Nice (nearly linear) scaling. I have labeled the instances with more than 5M messages
