With so many trash-fires going on worldwide, at least one bright spot (or rather, a cluster of bright spots) has been the growth in awareness and celebration of #Matariki, the Māori New Year.

Almost extinguished years ago by the forces of colonisation, it has risen, just like the stars always have, and will for generations. The stories, the communal celebration, the time to rest, reflect and reconnect... It's truly ātaahua (beautiful).

We just got back from the Matariki Festival of Lights in New Plymouth. Our usual light festival is around Xmas/NY and it's SO NICE not having to wait up til 10pm for it to get dark enough to see the bloody lights! Anyway, it was fun 🤩

I had been pondering what to have for our Matariki dinner, that represents the 4 elements of below the soil, above the soil, from freshwater, and from the ocean. Decided to wrap some Aoraki Salmon in nori, with some ginger, and roast some kumara, carrots, spuds. Brocollia & peas. Dessert is lemon cake with whipped cream. Making new traditions.

Trying something new for Matariki Kūmara cake with orange toffee sauce. Quite different and initially I wasn't fussed (mostly due to texture), but after a couple of bites I started to enjoy it.
