In social science research, there has been a lengthy discussion about how material aspects of #media, #data and #infrastructure can be adequately theorised and whether "constructivist" or "realist" approaches are more appropriate. I am a PhD candidate part of the SAND team and a new resident in Leipzig, Germany.
My #research will focus on Mumbai's Coastal Road project and mobility #infrastructures to reveal everyday experiences with #sand and probe questions of #materiality, commodification and #extraction. MATERIALITY + FORM. A new book about “slime” has me thinking about biological hydrogels; those substances that have qualities of both solids and liquids. The book argues we have “slime blindness” insofar as we neglect our dependence on ooze to lubricate in some situations and create barriers in others. Gonna spend the rest of the evening adding to my understanding of materials with microstructures that are so integral to making systems work.

Pleased to announce the publication of my article, "The International Materiality of Domestic Information: The Geopolitics of Newsprint During World War II and the Cold War," in The International History Review.

The piece traces global newsprint flows in the mid-20th century and shows the importance of US-Canada relations to them. For many people, being an informed citizen meant relying on foreign trade in newsprint.
