I knew I needed to work on my prob/stats skills, since I had only taken an intro class at university.
I found an Advanced Stats Specialization on Coursera and dove in, thinking I was going to have to slog through it...

Wrong ! Pythagor deal with distances i.e. modules in our case : |i|² + |1|² = h² and as |i| = 1 and |1| = 1 we have h² = 2 so h = sqrt(2)
Here i an 1 are complexe numbers or if interpreted geometricaly vectors. To apply Pythagor theorem you use distance.
