Today I asked students what properties they thought \( \approx \). They quickly realized that first they needed to think about which properties they should consider for \( \approx \). I was impressed when, listening in on one conversation, I heard a student tell her classmate "I think it's more like = than like +."
I thought I'd share this. Julia is well-known in the education community, to which she has contributed enormously.

If you are able, consider contributing, no matter how little. Everything helps.

It took me forever to come up with a first day of school activity this year. I kept looking for ideas, but I was unsatisfied with anything I came up with because I wanted to do something "new."
I finally ended up putting together a series of number contests for my students to compete in at vertical whiteboards. These turned out to be so much fun. One student told her friends that she hadn't laughed this much since science class last year which I am absolutely taking as a compliment.

@jclevelandtran @KarenCampe How about teaching the partitioning construction later in the year, after you've taught similar triangles? I teach the basic constructions at the start of the year, and then every unit afterwards has some constructions in it. This keeps construction alive as a parallel thread of the course.
I tweaked and updated my Applets Directory

Lots of possibly useful interactive pages for middle and high school math.
I was re-writing an introductory lesson on functions this morning and was reminded of something from years ago.
An influential teacher was telling their followers not to teach the vertical line test because it was confusing. I strongly disagreed. The vertical line test is a great way to meaningfully connect several fundamental ideas: the definition of a function, the definition of a graph, and domain and range. The influencer was unmoved, but conceded slightly, saying that the topic should be handled with caution. I responded "Yes, any time a teacher teaches something they don't fully understand themselves they should be cautious!"
It's sad to know that there are teachers out there not teaching the vertical line test because someone told them it's too confusing.
I learned that I can have multiple columns by selecting "enable advanced web interface" in Preferences.
Is it possible for one of those columns to follow more than one hashtag? (e.g. #classroommath #mtbos #mathed) If I try that, it looks for posts that have all three tags. I guess is interprets my last as ("and"). Is there a way to do "or"?
My newest blog post is an entry for #SoME3
