Today I acquired an #aperiodic #monotile known as the 'hat', rendered in foam. The squiggles on it are signatures of David Smith, the 'hobbyist' #mathematician who discovered the shape, and Chaim Goodman-Strauss, who worked with Smith on the proof confirming that it is definitely an aperiodic monotile (the first one to be discovered!)

Happy birthday to mathematician & NASA scientist Katherine Johnson (née Coleman; 1918 – 2020). One of the first Black women employed as a NASA scientist (and its predecessor NACA), she was known for her mastery of complex manual calculations of orbital mechanics and played a pivotal role in the success of the US crewed spaceflights from the beginning.

Happy birthday to #mathematician Karen Keskulla Uhlenbeck (b. 1942), a founder of modern geometric #analysis & winner of 2019 Abel Prize for “her pioneering achievements in geometric partial differential equations, gauge theory, & integrable systems, & for the fundamental impact of her work on analysis, geometry & mathematical physics.” The only woman winner, she donated 1/2 the money to orgs which promote engagement of women in math.⁠

A company sends three of its employees - an #engineer, a #physicist and a #mathematician - to a technical seminar that lasts over a week. During this time, all three have been put up in a nice hotel.

One night, the engineer wakes up and smells smoke. He goes out into the hallway and sees a fire. He goes back to his room, fills a bucket with water and puts out the fire. Then he goes back to sleep.

Some time later, the physicist wakes up and also smells smoke. He opens the door and immediately sees a fire in the hallway. He calmly goes to the nearest fire extinguisher and after calculating the flame size, propagation speed, oxygen content of the air, gas pressure in the extinguisher and several other factors, he finally aims at the calculated optimum point and can thus extinguish the fire with maximum efficiency and minimum effort.

Finally, the mathematician wakes up and smells smoke. He walks into the hallway, sees the blazing fire and the extinguisher. He thinks for a long time, plays through various approaches and calculations, types some formulas into his calculator, and after thinking for a while finally says, "Very good, the problem is solvable!"

Happy birthday to trailblazing American computer scientist Frances Elizabeth Allen (1932 – 2020) who made foundational contributions to optimizing compilers, optimizing programs and parallel computing. She was the first woman to become an IBM Fellow, where she worked from 1957 to 2002 and as an emeritus fellow afterwards. She was the first woman to win the Turing Prize.
