@awakey Excellent! Are you aware of the Bletchley/ Milton Keynes #MathsJam? We meet once a month in a pub to do/ talk about/ look at maths. There are some other OU people who come along! I would like to become an OU person too.
Details here: https://www.mathsjam.com/cities/bletchley/
It's free (unless you buy food/drink, of course!)
Hi folks,
Just a quick reminder that August's #Bletchley & #MK #MathsJam is:
- *tomorrow*: Tuesday 22nd!
- at Brewhouse and Kitchen in Central Milton Keynes (close to the theatre, *not* to be mixed up with the Midsummer Tap which is very close and has "pub and kitchen" on the sign!).
- From 7pm
Bringing yourself is an absolute must, and any #mathematical #ideas, #conundrums, #puzzles, #tidbits, #games, #books, #toys or #tales are encouraged but completely optional.
If you're able to let me know if you're intending to come I'd appreciate it, otherwise just turn up. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
See you there,
Tom

*Keeping in touch:*
I chatted with some people last month about how best to keep in touch & the only thing I came away with was that everybody would prefer something different, so you can choose any or all of these ways to find out about Bletchley MathsJam related things and I'll do my best to update them consistently (and please pass these on to anyone you meet who might be even remotely interested!):
→ The Bletchley MathsJam page on the official MathsJam website is at https://www.mathsjam.com/cities/bletchley/
→ Join the Bletchley MathsJam mailing list at https://www.freelists.org/list/bletchleymathsjam
→ Follow @BletchleyJam and/or @TeaKayB on twitter
→ Follow me on Mastodon: https://mathstodon.xyz/@TeaKayB (I'll also try to remember to include #BletchleyMathsJam in relevant posts)

Hi, I'm Tom!
I'm a #maths #teacher and a #museum #educator who works as a #freelancer attempting to bring the two together by encouraging and empowering #cultural organisations to explore the #mathematics in their stories, objects & exhibitions.
I play #guitar, run the local #MathsJam, try to keep up with #movies, and have a habit of smooshing bits of different interests and hobbies together to see what happens. I'm a fan of the Oxford comma, but not necessarily consistent in its use.
You've reached the end of your free trial of Tom. Subscribe at the bargain rate of £0.00/month for eternity. No refunds.

@Arithmaticks
It looks like Leeds #MathsJam hasn't yet been reinstated: https://www.mathsjam.com/cities/leeds/
It is THE PERFECT TIME for you to look into setting it up again. Maybe hassle @Missradders to get on it, or work together 😃
@Arithmaticks You should go to your local #MathsJam and take actual pictures.
My AI image generation exploration began this evening with an attempt to make a cover image for a #MathsJam event listing. I tried a few prompts, eventually settling on "a diverse group of people enjoying doing maths in a pub".
The results from DALL·E and Craiyon are attached.
@emmaemma53
It was great, and the best attendance ever! We hadn't met since the Before Times.
You may be the #MathsJam organiser that Liverpool needs...
@emmaemma53
We played with it at #MathsJam. We eventually got it, but only after one of our number looked up the solution and gave the rest of us hints.
@druinok
I think this evening's Bletchley (&MK) #MathsJam was the best ever attended, with 7 people joining in. We should have a three year hiatus every month!
It's #MathsJam a week today! Find out where your #MathsJam is here, and tell me if it's the same as my #MathsJam and then we can be #MathsJam buddies: https://www.mathsjam.com/find-a-jam/
And if your #MathsJam is not the same as my #MathsJam, guess what? We can still be #MathsJam buddies! Because that's how #MathsJams roll.
If you're in or near #MiltonKeynes
AND
you're interested in #Maths
AND
you haven't added yourself to the Bletchley @MathsJam mailing list then what are you waiting for?!
Do it now, and do it here: https://www.freelists.org/list/bletchleymathsjam
P.S. Bletchley #MathsJam is probably your closest if you're in #Northamptonshire, #Bedfordshire or #Buckinghamshire, but you can check here (and find your nearest MathsJam if you're anywhere else): https://mathsjam.com/find-a-jam/
#buckinghamshire #Bedfordshire #northamptonshire #mathsjam #maths #miltonkeynes
It's about time #Bletchley @MathsJam got started up again.
:kovalevskaya:
If you like maths and, more to the point, meeting other people who like maths in a pub, then #MathsJam is your kind of thing!
Find your nearest one here: https://mathsjam.com/find-a-jam/
:turing:
If you're in #MiltonKeynes, #Bedfordshire, #Buckinghamshire or #Northamptonshire the chances are that #Bletchley #MathsJam is your closest one!
:lovelace:
We'll be trying out some new ones in Milton Keynes to find something that works well. Join us on 18th July at Brewhouse & Kitchen MK for an evening of informal mathsjamming with fellow maths fans, and join the discussion list at https://www.freelists.org/list/bletchleymathsjam to continue the conversation & get updates.
:ramanujan:
You can also follow https://twitter.com/bletchleyjam on Twitter if you're over there too.
I haven't set up an account for Bletchley MathsJam here because I'm not yet aware of anyone other than me with a Mastodon account who is \(A \cap B\) where \(A = {a : \) lives works or otherwise finds themselves in or near Milton Keynes} and \(B = {b : \) wants to talk about maths with other people}.

Our venue has no AC, but there was only a few of us so we tried another venue. For now, we'll stick to the original venue, but we're on the lookout...
We did the 4 aces card trick from the mathsjam shout, and we discussed the calendar trick (the sum of a 3x3 grid in a calendar is 9 times the centre value)
We also discussed unit disk graphs and why \(K_{1,6}\) ain't one.
We briefly talked about knot theory and dna. Did you know prokaryotes have closed-loop chromosomes?
If anyone knows some interesting mathematics for a beginner interested in biology, please let me know!
Had our first little #mathsjam in #plzen :) as well as some of the ideas from the last two shouts, we discussed dobble, sphere packing and error correcting codes, pushing one cube through another, and the old "we were both born on exactly the same day to the same parents but are not twins" riddle! #math
@andrewb You ask 2 questions: how to explain, why it’s useful. For the latter, as a physicist, it’s easier to consider wave phenomena (vibrations, optics, ac electronics, quantum mechanics) as a complex variable rather than sin, cos. I use this a lot. @ColinTheMathmo posed a problem at #Mathsjam to intuit the sum of 2 sine waves of same freq, arbitrary phase and amplitude. My training gave me the intuition based on phasors which others have mentioned.
@ccppurcell Good Luck !!
Have you contacted Monthly #MathsJam Central? They have a sort of "Starter Pack", and there's all sorts of advice.
I went to #mathsjam in London a few times back in 2014 (has it really been so long?) I guess it's how I found out about mathstodon really, through following @ColinTheMathmo and others. I've been thinking it would be nice to organise mathsjam here in Plzeň for a while but I was busy and a little nervous about it. I finally decided to go for it, next month will be the first Plzeň mathsjam! Wish me luck :) #math
