Done, I guess. Turns out editing the code would only be needed if running #Dendrite naked towards the Internet. When behind a reverse proxy the changes needed can be made there.

The rest was just to spin up the additional Docker image for sliding-sync. I now have #Element X running towards my Dendrite server.

Okay, #matrix sollten wir wohl besser nicht Einsetzen:
Alle Server, die einen "Raum" replizieren, haben eine komplette Historie *aller* Events. Nicht nur der Nachrichten, sondern auch wer wann beigetreten ist, den Namen oder Avatar geändert hat, rausgeschmissen/verbannt wurde/hat, etc. Weder Nachrichten noch Events lassen sich löschen. Ende-zu-Ende-Verschlüsselung —Matrix' großes Versprechen— ist unzuverlässig. Dazu noch viele andere Probleme. Erschreckend!

#Element on my iPhone has suddenly gotten the "notifications arrive but sync needs the app to be open and takes _forever_" syndrome. Reading up on it this seems to be some sort of known issue, and rather than figuring out how come it can happen overnight the solution is apparently to upgrade to #ElementX

Sure. I use #Dendrite, not #Synapse, so it doesn't support Sliding Sync yet. It seems to consists of running an extra Docker container and then ...

... add a single line to a JSON response created by Dendrite.

This is why we open source. If my understanding is correct my server will support this today then.

(I'm getting the feeling Dendrite is a lost cause. Synapse or #Conduit would be my recommendation for someone doing a new #Matrix server install today)

Yo this thing is LOADED from Start9, Core i7, 32GB RAM, 2TB NVMe, there’s WiFi and ethernet. It’s so compact. I’m loving this just as a computer even before I get to mess with the StartOS. Again Intel ME is disabled and the BIOS is 99.99% open source as it’s I believe a @purism Librem mini

#Start9 sent me their Server Pure for a review. They appear to be based on the @purism Librem Mini computers. Intel ME is disabled out of the box. I will have to tinker with this on #twitch tomorrow live but their StartOS seems to be great for those starting to do a #homelab and they are all about data sovereignty and you owning your data. It has options to setup #Mastodon and #Matrix out the box as well as #bitcoin and #monero nodes with #tor as well.

It turns out that the #Matrix protocol is very poorly designed. There are so serious problems that IMHO it will be easier to design a new protocol than fix this. Read the full article, it starts lightly and gets worse and worse with each point.
