In class yesterday, we talked about geometry in crystalline unit cells: how do we specify coordinates of points, directions and planes?
Afterwards, a student came up and asked: “Sorry, but why are we doing all this?”
So I explained: coordinates of points are needed to describe what the crystal structure even is (where are the atoms?). Directions and planes are maybe not so obvious…
