Today’s listening is ‘Under The Covers vol. 1’, the 2006 album by Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs.

This blue vinyl 2 LP release comes from the ‘Completely Under The Covers’ box set, which was a RSD release in 2015.

Vol. 1 in this 3 volume series spans the 1960’s and comprises a selection of great cover versions of songs from that decade.

My favourite cover versions are probably ‘Cinnamon Girl’ (Neil Young) and ‘Different Drum’ (Michael Nesmith).

I've been continuing to listen to one Matthew Sweet album each day in release order. Listening to In Reverse today has been such a wonderful experience. The Wall of Sound production makes these songs sound so rich, with highlights like "What Matters" and the closing "Thunderstorm". The cover painting by Margaret Keane is a perfect fit.

Earlier this week I decided to start listening to Matthew Sweet's albums one a day in order of release. Inside and Earth were fun pop albums but listening to Girlfriend tonight is exhilarating. The string of great albums he produced following that is extraordinary.

Girlfriend introduced me to Tuesday Weld (on the cover) and Urusei Yatsura (in a music video), and I'll be forever thankful.

Back in 2017 I received this cat piece that is a 3D print of a ceramic sculpture made by Matthew Sweet and then hand painted by him. He included it as a reward alongside his album Tomorrow Forever.

Enjoying #MatthewSweet. I remember liking a few of his songs in the 90s. I’ve returned to it and think it holds up well.

For those who don’t know him he came from the same scene as REM and has similar sensibilities. He makes grungy power pop. What I didn’t realize is he’s put out an album every other year since the mid 80s. I have to respect working artists like that.
