Comment:
"Happy no one lost their life or property, hassa sad because no more new rock or pretty lava."

Response:
"Some of the lava fountains were quite spectacular. Sharing with you, a short video from Dec 1, 2022 of Mauna Loa's fissure 3."

"This idea does remain robust because the two volcanoes can still "feel" one another through stress effects. They don't have to be directly connected for this to happen. An example model of this process was published in 2012: nature.com/articles/ngeo1….https://www.nature.com/articles/ngeo1612"

Answer:
"There are geochemical trends that separate Hawaiian volcanoes - the Kea and Loa trends. Mauna Loa is on the Loa trend and Kilauea is on the Kea trend. Isotopic geochemical signals provide evidence for a bilateral hotspot plume that feeds the two trends."

Question:
"Would it be possible to provide more detail on the geochemistry of the two vents & why these differences indicate a magmatic source from different parts of the mantle- As opposed to fractions crystallisation
Given the timing of eruption of the 2 vents is the theory still robust"

Question:
"Are Mauna Loa and Kilauea’s plumbing systems completely disconnected or are they joined at depth?"

Answer:
"The compositions they erupt have subtle differences that indicate they come from different places in the mantle. So while they are part of the same overall hotspot system, they do not appear to be physically joined."

"Is this a coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not. The volcanoes are not directly connected, but might "feel" one another via stress effects. Mauna Loa's eruption could have allowed Kīlauea to "relax." That said, Kīlauea's eruption was already pretty tenuous, occurring at very low rates."

"Yes, you saw it right -- alert levels for BOTH Mauna Loa and Kīlauea were lowered this morning. Neither volcano is erupting right now, and gas emissions are at near-background levels, although HVO volcanologists remain vigilant for changes that might indicate renewed activity."

Question:
"Was there inflation at the end of Mauna Loa's 1984 eruption or is this something new?"

Answer:
"We don't really know. The low levels of inflation we are seeing now would not have been detectable by the techniques used to measure deformation in 1984. It's pretty small."

Question:
"Are there any published studies or data on tidal forces and Hawai’ian eruptions?"

Answer:
"There are. An oldy but a goody is agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.co In a nutshell, a volcano has to be about to erupt anyway for tides to make a difference. Stresses generated by tides just aren't that significant compared to stresses associated with magma accumulation/transport."

Question:
"How close did it make it to Saddle road?"

Answer:
"The closest lava reached is still about 1.7 mi from Saddle Road. The middle part of that flow is still hot and a bit higher in the middle than the edges. It will creep a bit closer as the hot insides push outward as the flow settles. Saddle Road is no longer in imminent danger."

"Day 13 of

USGS HVO reports that Mauna Loa continues to erupt but is no threat to the community. Fissure 3 lava flow rate is very low, and the flow front nearing Daniel K. Inouye Highway has stalled. (Good news for our Hawai'i Island community!)"

"December 9 eruption map shows the short distance lava is traveling out of the fissure 3 vent. Lava flows only made it ~ 1 mi (2 km) down the channel. The flow that made it to 10,000 ft on Dec 8 was inactive when crew visited yesterday."

The first few hours of "’s eruption were dynamic. Volcanologists intently watched monitoring data to track conditions & informed officials as the eruption developed. Read about those tense 24 hours in this week’s :"
