In the 1990s, a hot new idea for turning around big cities was putting in charge of the public . That’s how Chicago, NYC, Boston and other cities ended up with mayors and not school boards setting goals and appointing superintendents. And today? Mayors are giving up control. Turns out, it’s harder to run schools than, say, a public works dept. And bad as school boards are, voters prefer them. governing.com/education/big-ci

Michael Hancock served three terms as mayor of Denver. Will he be remembered for his successes, like bringing Denver back from the Great Recession and building Denver’s airport into the world’s third busiest? Or for his failures, like the drugs that plague downtown and the crisis he was late in recognizing? Time will tell. But we can say that he’ll be offered as proof of the old adage that a mayor’s third term is a curse. denverite.com/2023/07/17/denve

“We will get you a home. We will get you help. We will get you healed”: When running for office, the script calls for mayoral candidates to raise expectations. It changes in the period before inauguration when mayor-elects focuse on first tasks. And at the inauguration and in weeks following, build support for those tasks. Denver’s new mayor isn’t following script. At his inauguration, he was still … raising expectations. denverite.com/2023/07/17/mike-

How new problems are born: Michael Hancock became mayor of Denver in 2011 as the city was recovering from the Great Recession. Three terms later, his days as mayor are ended. What sticks in his mind, looking back? The conversation that introduced him to a whole new urban issue, . Before 2013, he had not seen as a problem he or any other mayor should be focused on. denverite.com/2023/07/15/inter

“You’ve got to have a short memory and a thick skin”: The quality all leaders must have is self control. Outrageous things will happen; you choose how to respond to them. Someone needs to share this with Cleveland Mayor Bibb, who recently declared war on the city council because some of its members are demagogues. You only made things worse, Mr. Mayor. cleveland.com/metro/2023/07/bi

Meet the proudly NIMBY mayor of Palo Alto CA, who is famous for fighting housing developments and accuses pro-housing activists of promoting Soviet ideology. A real estate agent, she’s known to tell whoopers … like “there’s plenty of housing, you just need a superb Realtor, like me.” sfchronicle.com/bayarea/articl

Keep an eye on Denver’s next mayor. Mike Johnston says his first task will be to build “micro-communities” for the homeless across the city. With 2,000 parcels to choose from, he says, he’ll start selecting the sites on the day he takes office. If Johnston succeeds in spreading the homeless across the city while somehow connecting them with services they’ll need, he will indeed change how mayors deal with . But … big if. denverite.com/2023/06/07/mike-

There are young or mayors-elect in Cleveland, Cincinnati and Akron OH, and newspaper reporters see it as something involving state and national politics. Here’s an alternative narrative: Maybe what’s attracting this young, diverse group to city halls isn’t the chance to be governor, senator or (dream big) president. Maybe leading a city IS the reward. cleveland.com/news/2023/05/wer
