I’m not 100% comfortable with the proliferation of “gift” as a verb and I might as well just come out and say it.

Philological musings

kith

This is an ancient word in English derived from its Old English (c. 500 - c. 1150) roots: "cúð" [pron. "kyouth"]. It originally referenced "[k]nowledge, acquaintance with something; knowledge communicated, information" (OED), including such knowledge as the rules of etiquette.

Later, it was seen as merely another reference for kinsfolk, relatives, or family--its use in the expression "kith and kin."

9-11 in Germany has a number of different, even ambiguous or contradictory meanings, not only because we read dates day-month-year.

The list of historical dates here includes the anniversaries of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the beginning of the November pogroms in 1938, the Hitler putsch in Munich in 1923 and the proclamation of the republic in Germany in 1918 as the date of the November Revolution in Berlin.

Lots of trouble _and_ lots of good developments.
