"After two centuries of improved precision, recent measurements of G are troubling. A handful of labs around the world have turned up values that disagree (SN Online: 4/30/15). The scattered values could be a sign of trouble with the measurement techniques among various groups, or there might be a more intriguing aspect."

#Canadians are worried about the rapidly #metastasizing #ClimateCrisis . For good reason. The impacts are hitting harder and faster - like hundreds of #wildfires burning out of control all across our nation right now. Meanwhile, our #emissions of #climate #destabilizing #GreenhouseGases aren't going down enough to stop the #ClimateChaos from growing ever more dangerous.

Anyone know of a nice and accurate digital caliper that takes AA/AAA batteries or is rechargeable? I've had a Capri Tools CP20001 for ~8 years and I like its features (especially the depth measuring) but I'm getting tired of feeding it a steady diet of LR44s which it drains even when off.

My bachelor student and I performed some TGA #measurements yesterday, using these cute, tiny crucibles.
The ceramic "plates" the samples (5-15 mg) are put on are smaller than the tip of my pinky.
The sample holder is picked up with a hook which is attached to an extremely sensitive scale and then put into an oven which heats the samples to 1100 °C, while continuously monitoring the weight of the sample to see exactly when different organic products start to evaporate.

The badgers are still rejecting standard measurements according to my inbox: "Cubs are now a month old, about the size of a small pineapple, and developing their first teeth and iconic stripes." Fruit is the new cubic unit. 🍍 🦡

Badgers reject both metric and imperial weights according to my inbox: "Newborn cubs are 15-16 cm long with a 3-4 cm tail, and between the weight of a kiwi or an orange." I can only speculate where the badgers are getting out of season fruit for comparison.

In a time before modern techology, this was how they ensured that a foot (or any other linear measurement) used to build something in Glasgow remained the same as a foot in Birmingham, or London, or for that matter in Australia or Canada.

I love this little piece of Glasgow's past set into the bottom right hand corner of the City Chambers. I suspect a lot of people walk past it every day without giving it a second glance or realising what it is.

I remember seeing a current affairs segment from the 1980s where a reporter ran an experiment of asking old people to reckon market stall grocery prices in pre-decimal currency. Before #decimalization it was held in the popular press that the old people would never get used to this new money.
Almost none of the old people coped, and even made comments about how difficult it was.
Old people actually do acclimate to these things.

Not so much, really, I would say. As I said, I was taught in #metric _decades_ ago.
The idea that there's a big group of people still around who came from an era where Imperial was taught in primary school is not really true any longer. It has been a _long_ time, and a lot of the population has been brought up metric all along.
And even those people who were educated in Imperial have long since acclimated and forgotten it.

And, by the way, under the 1963 Act the only legal multiples of a pound that can be used as standard weights in trade were 56, 50, 28, 20, 14, 10, 7, 6, 5, 4, 2, and 1 pound(s).
And the only legal multiples of feet for standard lengths were 100, 66, 50, 33, 20, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1.
Very little in the Imperial world _actually_ operated in base 12.
We who never had this in primary school decades ago are fortunate.

"Although the differences are usually well-understood by international traders, they do very occasionally cause us a little difficulty, particularly in relation to the retailing of imported prepacked goods."
So it's not #Brexit. It's buying stuff from the U.S. and dealing with the same set of different U.S. #measurements that T.L.E. Gregory spoke about in the 1960s. (-:

Given your article, what Gregory wrote in 1964 seems apposite:
"U.S. and British measures of capacity of similar denominations, of course, have never represented the same quantities. The considerable disparity in volume of these derived units, due to historical differences and long usage in our respective Countries, clearly made it impossible to bring our measures of capacity into conformity.

An interesting contemporary account of the 1963 Act, which Wikipedia won't even hint at, is "THE NEW BRITISH WEIGHTS AND MEASURES LAW, ITS DEVELOPMENT, ENACTMENT, AND PRINCIPAL FEATURES" by T. L. E. Gregory, Chief Inspector of Weights and Measures in Nottingham.
It discusses the "Green Book", the 1960 Bill that failed to pass, the redefinition of the Imperial gallon in the Act, and the hundreds of pieces of repealed legislation.
