"The paper ... provides a critical introduction to mechanism design... for researchers who study big data, platform capitalism... So far, most critical work in these areas has not engaged directly with this hybrid economic-engineering discipline, even though it is now central to the operations of platform firms, as well as other online networks and data-driven decision-making systems."

@gilduran Sorry. That stinks.
If the #MechanismDesign (#algorithms and #UI #affordances) continues to support normal #prosocial human instincts, it might be stable for many many years. It's worked for Wikipedia, StackExchange. #Fedies survived several growth spurts over the past 5 yr. Even survived a hostile takeover attempt by Truth.Social. Even if some developers and #admins lose #noncommercial, #human-centric focus, other supercooperators step in and fedi-up

@alek thank you for your recent techpolicy.press article explaining the evolution of the #fediverse and #Eugen's role ("person-institution") and the finances of it all. Is there anyone working on the #mechanismdesign of #mastodon and #activitypub ?

@jan this feels right from a theoretical perspective. You have to cap the throughput/load of the most popular nodes in a #mesh network or #distributed system or #federated system. #Zipf's law demands it. The resource duplication of a federated system creates exponential inefficiencies that must be capped in order to achieve sustainable #scaling and #fairness.

@enobacon Copy paste and/or reply. Makes us more #mindful. #slowmode thinking.
And helps minimize info overload. And reduces the amount of "taking out of context", reacting. Some conversation designers and game theorists and mechanism/system/community design people (including @Eugen, I think) see the quote-toot button as an #antifeature

I'm an AI engineer and my team has recently been helping a startup implement a #FOSS #Discord bot system called Stigbot, Stigsite, and Stigflow to assist with "Collective #Sensemaking". It's based on research by Stigliani. Hence the names.
I've learned that this means a lot of things to different people:
