The show “I’m a Virgo” by Boots Riley is an absurdist critique of super hero culture through the lens of what it means to be Black in America. The satire is on the same level as Sorry to Bother You and Random Acts of Flyness (though the later still wins visually for me). Worth a look and hope we get a second season.

Social scientists of mastodon: Do you have any experience with media analyses? Can you recommend any tools? How do you deal with paywalls?

I want to search local papers of a specific region in Germany within a time frame of a few years (~2015-2022) for articles that use certain words/terms/names. But most articles are behind paywalls, and there must be efficient ways to automate the search?

Can anyone think of any modern media (show, movie, game, book) that actually tries to portray what it's like to be homeless* in modern day?

The best example I can think of was like, a Static Shock episode from like 2005 or something. But has anything tried to show the reality of for example, homeless queer kids, living in squatter settlements, panhandling, or even just having to couchsurf for an extended duration?

News Sniffer tracks news articles and highlights the changes. We've been running continuously since 2006 and have so far found 2.1 million articles and caught over 4.3 million changes!

We focus mostly on what are considered the more serious mainstream news media outlets such as The BBC, The Guardian, The New York Times etc.

And some more stats...

On activity, HN saw 3.76 million comments, and 387k submissions in 2021.

That works out to about 10,300 comments/day, and 1,058 submissions/day.

(I suspect both are undercounts omitting flagged, dead, and killed content. But it's a good start.)

Off the top of my head, interesting bits here:

  • A single human can moderate about 800 items/day, so 10,300 comments would require a dedicated mod team of about 13. HN mods make clear that they don't see everything, so I strongly suspect the mod team is smaller, and split amongst other (e.g., dev, ops) roles.

  • 1,000 items/day is roughly on par with how many items a newswire submits per day. Reuters, AP, and AFP run roughly 1k--5k items, a large portion of which are, I believe, photos rather than stories. (A typical newspaper sees ~100 -- 500 items, weekday vs. Sunday editions, per some research I'd done a few years back.)

I'm guestimating average comment size, but if that's 250 bytes/comment (roughly Tweet-sized), then HN sees about 1 GB in newly-generated user content per year.

This is an interesting point: that even for reasonably substantial sites, all user-generated textual content is comfortably small. Images, audio, and video are where things start blowing up. Also metadata.

It is - finally - time.
I am doctoral student at the Techncial University of Munich and work on responsible science communication in the field of .

Atm, I mostly look at the German media debate on AI, tracing constructions of expertise and the roles ascribed to scientists. Also very interested in 'local' German takes on bias, racism, sexism and other structural inequalities in the field of AI.
