Sketching out the foundations of teaching this Autumn, and getting rather engaged in what fun* artefacts and activities I can pull together for a module ft. a Media Archaeology strand. Any recommendations for interesting syllabi / examples out there?
*Fun for me, at any rate!

Available now from Meson Press: Shintaro Miyazaki's new book “Counter-Dancing Digitality. On Commoning and Computation”
https://meson.press/books/counter-dancing-digitality (free PDF via Open Access)
This has been my most extensive translation effort to date. Going through all these elaborations and finding English words for them, particularly for the idiosyncratic expressions, has been a deep dive into the inspiring network of thoughts presented in this text. I am happy it is finally published: “Digitality is imposed upon us! To change this, we should not turn away from it, but look carefully into its transformative power and make operable alternatives such as counter-algorhythms and solidarity-oriented commoning. The aim is a world where profit and property no longer exist, but instead where a cooperative dance – between all the needs posed by our ecosystems, and all the needs of people – becomes practicable. This book is a critical media theory of future-building, modulated by a focus on the potentials of counter-dancing as providing ways to unfold fugitive practices.”
Prof. Dr. Shintaro Miyazaki teaches and researches in the field of media studies (digitality, computation, critique, and social transformation) at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. His collaegue Jussi Parikka, professor in digital aesthetics and culture at Aarhus University & Winchester School of Art, says: “Shintaro Miyazaki’s joyful book builds a media theoretical proposal for collective rhythms in computational culture. The mix of wonderful readings and insights offers alternatives to the depressing beat of capitalism, while maneuvering from cybernetics and computational modeling to play, from media archaeology to Marx and digital commons.”
The German version, published a few months earlier, can be accessed from https://www.transcript-open.de/isbn/6626.

Last week I ran a copy of the After Dark Itchy & Scratchy screensaver for Mac System 7.x on a test run of Twitch. It got more views than anything I've ever streamed before.
Do folks want me to stream more screensaver content for #marchintosh? I have a nearly-complete set of all the After Dark screensaver modules. How about a 30-minute stream of the fish tank screensaver that you can use as your Zoom background or something? Marbles 2.0 is also awesome. Let me know your preferences in the comments and I'll start the stream in a couple of hours.

today's reading, helping me to reimagine #mediaarchaeology via new materialism. "the world is a continuous, restless swarming of things; a continuous coming to light and disappearance of ephemeral entities. A set of vibrations...A World of happenings, not of things."
Sunday Funday, am I doing it right? (Sorry about the moire pattern in the photo)

Here goes, my first attempt at #introduction: I'm professor of #visualculture at #NTNU, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, where I head up the fledgling research group Media, Data, Museums. As a photo historian with a background in professional picture research, I study the labour, systems, technologies, and #infrastructures that underpin visual culture from the early 1800s to the present. More of a media antiquarian than a media archaeologist. I'm the author of Picture Research: The Work of Intermediation from Pre-Photography to Post-Digitization – forthcoming from MIT Press in June 2023. In real life I'm quite loud; on social media I'm usually quiet.

"Schon jetzt gibt es Unmengen von Daten, die schlicht deshalb unlesbar sind, weil sich die Computer, die sie geschrieben haben, nicht mehr zum Laufen bringen lassen. Ohne Gedächtnis und d. h. ohne eine Geschichte, die auch und gerade Maschinen unter #Artenschutz stellt, ist die Erbschaft dieser Zeit also nicht an die kommende weiterzugeben." A special kind of #mediaarchaeology ... today I "unpacked" the contents of the #Apple Asimov-ftp-archive.
First of all there were .zip files. Then .gzip and .tar came up. Some moments ago I upacked .arc and .z (unix compress!) files ...
And now I discover ... deep down in the archives ... .lha and .lhz! ... and James Jacobs, the guy who programmed the WinArcadia #emulator and several stuff for the #Amiga and with whom I worked together some years ago!

Thanksgiving #mediaarchaeology build project is complete! I got a #RaSCSI kit from a #retro #Mac enthusiast last month at #Saintcon, and finally got around to building it. The #Pi hat emulates a SCSI bus and can be plugged right in to old 68k Macs and used as an external drive, or as a replacement boot drive if installed internally. I can manage disk images stored as files through a web interface or by SCPing into the Pi.
I lost track of the person who gave the kit to me, but I wanted to thank them because this was a huge deal for me. I'm deathly afraid of doing SMB soldering but I managed it anyway. Feels like I leveled up in my build skills with this project. Now I have something that can really help me with archiving and going through Mac disk images, and I'm so grateful. Big shout-out also to @D4rkm4tter for his encouragement and for the most important lesson in choosing the right tip for the soldering job. Thanks also to @chetwisniewski - that's your old Pi B+ under there!

Just occurred to me that this (what seems to be a sizeable shift in how we see and use social media) must be an absolutely fascinating moment for #mediaarchaeology and/or #digitalarchaeology folks. I’ll confess to only just grasping clumsily around the perimeter of the field as part of my MA but it must be a fairly pivotal moment for those deeply embedded in it right now.
