Tewkesbury Abbey: An old postcard. The Abbey was near the site of the battle in 1471 and several Lancastrians sought sanctuary there after the battle. However, since it was not an official place of sanctuary, King Edward IV had the men dragged out and killed.

22 May 1455 was the 1st Battle of St. Albans. It was fought through the town including in Market Place, which still functions as a place for a market! Richard duke of York fought against the king's men including the duke of Somerset who died in the skirmish.

Hunter’s Sty Bridge

The River Esk has a few single-arched bridges, but the best one is probably the Hunter's Sty Bridge. It's located at the bottom of Huntersty, the 'steep path of the hunters,' just past the northern end of Westerdale village.

Hunter's Sty Bridge was most likely built in the late 13th century to provide access to the Royal Forest of Pickering, although some believe t ...

There's a gun battery right on the point (the first photo with the is an interior shot of that), and behind that the gun tower and St Petroc's church (the second photo. The glooming mass of the flat-topped Black Hambleton, the northern end of the calcareous Tabular Hills that range from Roulston Scar in the south.

I'm about to start reading Haven by Emma Donoghue, about a trio of monks during the Dark Ages who set out to found a hermitage on the towering rock of Skellig Michael - the two novices faithfully following their increasingly crazed and autocratic religious maniac of a leader. I love Donoghue's tender voice, really looking forward to this

Greyfriars monastery - a last vestige of the lost Mediaeval city of Dunwich, Suffolk, UK. The old friary was destroyed by the sea in the 13th century so the friars rebuilt it on a hill top outside the city walls, reusing all sorts of salvaged stones, including Scandinavian ship's ballast. It's a hotspot of geodiversity!

The Perambulation Stone.

Erected in 1240 when the ‘boundaries’ of The Forest of Dartmoor were marked by King John’s officials (he’d flogged off lots of surrounding land to raise war chest monies)
