Today in 1973, Gay Liberation activist Mark Segal - famous for chaining himself to buildings and heavy objects as a form of protest - disrupted a taping of the popular syndicated talk/variety TV series THE MIKE DOUGLAS SHOW and handcuffed himself to one of the cameras in the studio in Philadelphia.

He did this to protest the show's avoidance of gay topics and its producers' cancellation of a scheduled onair discussion of Gay Liberation. Three years later, Mark founded the weekly newspaper the Philadelphia Gay News, which he still publishes.

On the set (left to right) in this photo: host Mike Douglas, fortune-telling "foot reader" Elizabeth Martineau Dawson, and show business legends Tony Bennett and Helen Hayes. The disruption was edited out of the broadcast.

WITH MAYOR LINDSAY - 4/19/1970, WNEW-TV, NYC

In 1970, New York City's cops and government were still regularly harassing queer communities, raiding queer bars, arresting people, and engaging in job discrimination.

Mayor Lindsay refused to do anything about it or even meet with gay activists. So the Gay Activists Alliance disrupted the mayor's TV talk show to demand action. Some of it was questions shouted from the audience: "What are you doing to end job discrimination against homosexuals?" "Are you in favor of repeal of the sodomy laws?" And some was heckling: The mayor says "If you're stuck in a traffic jam, it's illegal to blow your horn." A GAA member shouts back "It's illegal in New York to blow anything!"

The show aired that night with the disruptions meticulously edited out. Ten days later, GAA had a meeting with Deputy Mayor Aurelio.

UNPLUGGED: "k.d. lang" - 3/28/1993, MTV

Back when openly queer celebrities were a rare novelty, MTV UNPLUGGED devoted a show to an acoustic set performed by recently out-of-the-closet singer k. d. lang. Many people had speculated that her 1992 coming out would end her country music career, but there she was the next year, performing on MTV at a time when music was an important (if fading) part of the popular cable channel's brand.
