In social science research, there has been a lengthy discussion about how material aspects of #media, #data and #infrastructure can be adequately theorised and whether "constructivist" or "realist" approaches are more appropriate. Almost a closing word for our @zemki workshop on European and Latin American perspectives on #mediatization: Guillermo Olivera shows how similar the conceptualizations are.

The last presentation at @zemki for today by Guillermo Olivera is about #mediatization and the necessity to grasp the construction of meaning in order to analyze media-related transformations. A link between European and Latin American tradition is to see meaning as relational.

The 6th presentation of the @zemki workshop on "Where is #mediatization research heading?" is by Stephan Görland, who talks about "mediatized #migration". In research there was a "delayed digital turn" - only after 2015 it became a topic how deeply migration is mediatized. Today's migration cannot be understood beyond digital media - when migration is organized with digital media from the beginning researching media and migration is not simply a question of integration through media any more.

One argument is that media are not simulacra, but part of the construction of #reality.

The next presentation in our @zemki workshop on European and Latin-American perspectives on #mediatization: Stefanie Averbeck-Lietz discusses links and differences of the traditions. Her argument: Eliséo #Veron is an important bridge- and he should be better known in European media and communications research. But only little of his work has been translated into English - e.g. in the mediatization handbook edited by Knut Lundby.

In the second presentation of the @zemki workshop on mediatization, @cscolari compares the European and Latin American traditions of #mediatization research - focusing on #materiality.
