- Rolling Medicaid Purge

> Largest Concentration of Health Insurance Loss in US History

> States across the U.S. have stripped nearly 6 million people of Medicaid coverage over just the past several months, creating what one healthcare activist and researcher described as "the largest concentration of health insurance loss in American history."

NOTES/ COMMENTS Re., “ROLLING MEDICAID PURGE….LARGEST CONCENTRATION OF
HEALTH INSURANCE LOSS IN US HISTORY"

* The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the urgent need for expansion ,
NOT REDUCTION, of the Medicaid health insurance program.
*  In too many states, political decisions by state legislators to
deny health insurance to thousands of their citizens has resulted in
an almost non-existent social and health safety net.

*  Decisions in 2016/2017 by 25 states to reject the expansion of
Medicaid coverage under the Affordable Care Act resulted in an
estimated 7,115 and 17,104 more deaths than had all states opted in,
according to researchers at Harvard Medical School and the City
University of New York.
* The researchers found that because of the states’ “opting out” of
the Medicaid expansion, 7.78 million people who would have gained
coverage remained uninsured.
* To worsen the situation, many states have over the last decade
privatized administration of their Medicaid program into a managed
care program administered by the private profit health insurance
industry.

* The companies are paid by state government, and their profit depends
on spending as little as possible on Medicaid patients.
*  It’s hard to imagine any greater disconnect between public good
and private profit: the interest of private health insurance
companies lies not in the obvious social good of delivering quality
health care to patients but in having as few as possible treated as
cheaply as possible.
* No better example exists of a private capitalist enterprise that
feeds on the misery of man.

* You might think that we learned the lesson of discredited managed
care in the 1990s.
*  The term “managed care” is confusing to many, but really amounts
to managed reimbursement rather than managed care.
* A set prospective annual payment is made by federal/state
governments, as in the case of state Medicaid managed care, to cover
whatever services patients will receive over the coming year.
* There is therefore a built-in incentive for managed care
organizations to skimp on care and pocket more profits.

I’ve seen ads on tv, but none online about making sure you have your paperwork in on time: According to KFF, 73% of the people disenrolled from so far have lost coverage for procedural reasons—such as a failure to return paperwork on time or jump through other, often confusing, bureaucratic hoops—not because they were deemed ineligible due to their income or other factors.

this article is published from Dec 5, 2012, the day after the vote. This is who the is and it has only gotten worse. I know many that are losing and they have loved ones that they cannot afford to take care of bc states are still holding it hostage and refuse to expand coverage. They have a spouse or child that needs full time care but to get it, the spouse or parent will have to sell everything (be homeless) for their loved one to "earn" the "benefits." That's BS

Seems like another good day to remind everyone what the are and have been for quite some time. Anyone remember Bob Dole "wheeling" into Congress for the UN Treaty on Disability Rights? I do. They all applauded him and then voted NO. Hauntingly, almost 11 years later, reading John Kerry's words..."it needs to be a wake-up call about a broken institution that's letting the American people down." How many have been kicked off now? Some illegally?

The biggest priorities for U.S. health care are closing the Medicaid coverage gap in the ACA-holdout red states and adding dental/vision/hearing benefits to original Medicare.

Unfortunately, it will take progressive supermajorities in both houses of Congress to pass something like single-payer.

It is great for Dems to tout Medicare being able to negotiate drug prices, but let’s hear about what more progress they would make if they win.

To understand (and it works similarly elsewhere) consider that has a hospital closing crisis that could be cured at no cost to the state by accepting Obamacare expansion - but the voters will re-elect the corrupt Governor who refuses to accept it.

How Health Insurers Have Made Appealing Denials So Complicated
==

"I spoke with more than 50 insurance experts, patients, lawyers, physicians and consumer advocates about building a tool anyone could use to navigate insurance appeals.

"Nearly everyone said the same thing: Great idea. But almost impossible to do."

"Some 42 million children who come from low-income families or have a disability are covered by Medicaid and the related Children's Health Insurance Program. Schools offer a convenient setting to provide health care services to many of those kids — in addition to disability services required by law — but many states haven't been taking advantage of funding that's long been available through Medicaid and CHIP."

@KimPerales OK but this is all happening on Biden’s watch, just like losing reproductive rights, and the fact that we have more being pooped out by Americans this week then we did the same week in 2020.

Gas prices around here are brutal again, nobody can afford food, everyone’s getting kicked off because he couldn’t even bother firing from the post office so nobody’s getting their paperwork in on time.

The world is burning and he ordered more drilling.

but yeah, what American needs right now is more paid propaganda circulating on social media telling us how well we are all doing because of . That’ll fix it

Analysis by researchers indicates 3 out of every 4 people kicked off Medicaid in the “unwinding” aren’t actually ineligible.

Instead, they likely lost healthcare due to paperwork issues, as states reject best practices suggested by the federal government.

And now good ole American DIY healthcare. After 6 months and 6 ER trips my insurance finally approved my spine MRI. And I’m making 4 calls today to schedule follow up with specialists. Not hopeful on timing. One specialist first opening is in 4 months.

Cost containment strategies may mean that elderly, low-income, disabled Americans of Mexican origin in Texas are less likely to have full access to Medicaid benefits than their peers in California.
