'the field of medicine has acknowledged that language has the power to perpetuate bias…and worked to scrub its vocabulary of…"schizophrenic" (which reduces a person to a stigmatized disease), "drug abuser" (which reduces a person to their addiction), and "sickler" (a derogatory term for someone with sickle-cell disease)… yet, doctors continue to describe women’s bodies…[with] "hostile uterus", "incompetent cervix", and "habitual aborter"' #GeriatricPregnancy #MedicalBias https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2023/01/geriatric-pregnancy-old-outdated-medical-terms/672834/

@CynicalDreamer
John Oliver addressed medical bias on Last Week Tonight.
Weighing in on the issue was comedian Wanda Sykes, who had undergone a double mastectomy. What did she get for pain relief?
"Ibu-fucking-profen," Sykes said.

COVID-19 highlighted the fact that skin pigmentation alters measurements. Sjoding et al.published a retrospective report showing that pulse oximeters overestimate the true oxygen saturation of Black people. This inaccuracy means that diagnoses of hypoxaemia, the condition of having low levels of oxygen in one’s blood, are ~3X more likely to be missed in Black than in white patients.

So good treatment there, but my #OCD was ready to comment on that too. Which is why, after this loving care, I was forced to hobble 2 km on foot instead of taking a taxi or the subway. I'm so exhausted with #OCD that makes medical treatments even more difficult to endure and classify the #medicalbias against black, fat, queer and disabled bodies. 7/ ?!#÷
Now I probably should have called the ambulance, rinse, X-ray, bandage, done. This is how it would be without #OCD AND #Black experiences in the healthcare system. 2/ #medicalbias
