Did you ever try to use Mastodon with an external client? My @tootapp client (iOS) is quite a bit customisable and makes me happy.

Also the dark-ish #meemu theme that can be used on queer.party feels nice.

On desktop some people use other clients like https://pinafore.social/ or https://semaphore.social/ (forgot the names of the others || Update: found a link https://github.com/tleb/awesome-mastodon). Maybe you‘ll find a theme that suits your vibe.
