Joining #Mastodon has made me think back to the early internet, before social media giants created the three-ring circus we all know and hate today. One site that I remembered was #Metafilter. Roughly, #MeFi is to #reddit what #Mastodon is to the bird site. Most importantly, it has a foolproof way to keep out bots and trolls: new members need to pay a one-time fee of 5 bucks to join.
