After decades of studying why big projects go awry, prof offers advice on how to keep things on track. Decades ago Oxford prof Flyvbjerg sought to find out how often major infrastructure projects were completed on time, on budget. He found no one kept track, so he created his own database - the vast majority of those w value of at least $1B did not meet their budget or deadline. upgrades were among those w worst outcomes. washingtonpost.com/transportat

I hate They look like something out of 'War of the Worlds'. I remember when I was about 11 (1994), standing on the top of Tower Bridge walkway looking at the skyline of London. The only ugly buildings back then were the Natwest Tower (Tower 42) and some other nondescript dark tall rectangles. Now it's got all sorts of rubbish sticking up into the sky and looming over streets. The shard is the worst offender. The size is so overbearing.

(1) Get BIG things done: fix

Think slow, act fast

are late bc not enough time spent planning (minimize uncertainty, shrink risk).

’s Museum Bilbao opened on time & under budget: experimenting w/designs & models for 2 yrs.

Big things doesn’t mean Gehry poring over blueprints. You could just play w/LEGOS.

Is Mars really the best place to set up a human colony? What about Venus? Sure, on the surface, Venus sounds like a bad idea. Literally, the surface of Venus is prohibitively hot. But, high above the surface, in the clouds, could be the ideal place for a place to live.

So apparently or or whatever is actually happening? Or at least they've broken ground on it?
This...
I want to just say it's the dumbest thing ever, but I feel like it can't possibly be as dumb as it looks, like I must be missing something. What am I missing that makes this not the dumbest thing ever?
They're trying to build this huge, impractical city in the middle of nowhere to solve the problem of... sometimes you have to get a connecting train?
What bigger problem is this massive, destructive, wasteful project solving, someone please tell me!

Here is the sad thing about in

Drinking water comes once a week for 5-6 hours which has to filled up in a tank for most households. The project that was supposed to provide water to the valley took more than 23 years to complete. Problem is population has tripled & climate disasters have interrupted operations which has resulted in intermittent supply.

Should we still target for to solve these types of urban water crises? I'm not so sure anymore
