Another "uncharacterized" gene (YGL036W) in yeast is now characterized - as encoding a protein (re-named Vir1) that is part of the mRNA m6A methyltransferase complex required during meiosis.
The deletion mutant is defective in meiosis and has zero m6A, just like ime4 deletion.

@BrentToderian There's a really fun biology/philosophy paper (sadly paywalled) arguing that living organisms solved a version of the #gerrymandering problem (of deciding which genes get into the next generation) by evolving fair #meiosis. If a gene cannot reliably know which other genes it'll interact with in various generations, it better try to do good things in all possible situations (= bodies), which is good for the whole organism. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12041-022-01383-w
