Y a pesar de que son alimentos casi indispensables en muchos hogares, seguimos sin conocer todos sus secretos.
Una de las cuestiones que más intriga a la comunidad científica es de dónde proceden estas dos hortalizas, próximas al pepino.
Los investigadores dan por hecho que los actuales melones y sandías proceden del descubrimiento de anómalos frutos dulces carentes de cucurbitacina, el compuesto que confiere amargor a las cucurbitáceas —familia a la que pertenecen sandías y melones, junto con pepinos, calabazas y otros—. Estas se habrían seleccionado y cultivado hasta llegar a nuestros días.
Los melones, pepinos y sandías se domesticaron varias veces a lo largo de la historia de la humanidad. Pero colocar estas domesticaciones en el espacio y con nombres es mucho más difícil de lo que pensaba hace diez o quince años.
Varios investigadores, redibujaron una de las ramas del árbol genealógico de la especie Citrullus lanatus, comúnmente conocida como sandía. Hasta hace no mucho, se pensaba que esta especie pertenecía al linaje del melón cidra de Sudáfrica, Citrullus caffer. No obstante, la nueva información obtenida a través del estudio genético ha confirmado que el pasado de la sandía está vinculado al del melón Kordofán (C. lanatus), de Sudán.
Además, sus conclusiones son consistentes con algunas antiguas pinturas egipcias que sugieren que la sandía pudo ser consumida en el valle del Nilo hace unos 4.000 años. Basándose en el ADN, encontraron que las sandías como las conocemos hoy, con pulpa dulce, a menudo roja, que se puede comer cruda, eran genéticamente más cercanas a las formas silvestres de África occidental y nororiental.
Por su parte, el camino que ha recorrido el melón —Cucumis melo— no está tan claro. La secuenciación del genoma de 1.175 variedades de esta especie, que prácticamente representan toda la diversidad que existe, indicó que se ha domesticado tres veces de forma independiente, una en África y dos en la India.
El estudio de todas estas variedades ha permitido comprender cómo se produjo la domesticación del melón hace 4.000 años. Este hallazgo del Centro de Investigación en Genómica Agraria (CRAG) propició el proyecto Melonomics, una iniciativa española público-privada que hace nueve años publicó la secuenciación del genoma de esta planta y de siete de sus variedades lo que permitirá conocer cuál es el proceso de maduración del fruto. Actualmente se está investigando qué genes y programas genéticos regulan que el melón madure de una forma u otra. Esto es relevante, sobre todo para las empresas de mejora. En el caso de los melones climatéricos, como piel de sapo, lo que quieren es que sean de larga vida, que se conserven mejor una vez recogidos.

I’m beyond proud of this Kazakh #melon plant for setting fruit! I found three little fuzzy balls (heh) today. Melons are pretty marginal up here by the Puget Sound, so I did everything I could think of to maximize my chances. I started seeds twice, one in May (still too cold) and again in June. The first seedlings included two watermelon, in case we got a blazingly hot early summer. (Spoiler: we didn’t.) By June I’d tempered my hopes and just started the three most cold-tolerant, short season varieties I had. When I transplanted the second batch out, I put them in the warmest part of the garden. And they’re doing it! Go melons!

@gardening some pretties from this morning’s walk. First is my very best #melon vine, growing in the warmest spot in the yard, and I’m very proud of how hard it’s trying. It’s even got a good chance at giving me edible fruit!

Next is a half-tall #BrusselsSprouts. It’s my first time growing them, and I’m delighted at how big and burly the plants are. Look at those lovely little buds!
And last I visited the clover lawn / dry garden. This spring, I thought the overwintered #clover wasn’t going to thrive, so I planted a few things there … and then the clover exploded! I’m leaving these plants to fend for themselves, and they’re doing ok.
The #tomato is a Graham’s Good Keeper.

Wednesday, I got a #cantaloupe #melon and cut it up this morning. It's the sweetest, juiciest cantaloupe I've had in 20 or more years (those were #Maryland #EasternShore melons).
The flavor reminds me of those orange peanut-shaped "marshmallow" candies, in a great way.
